This Coopers Hawk (?) was patiently scoping out the feeders this morning. He sat there for a couple of hours looking and hoping......

Beautiful adult sharp-shinned, Ian. You got some excellent images and great poses. Lots of detail. I'm jealous. Nice captures.

An excellent set. A hawk looking just like this one sure cleared my yard of feeding birds yesterday but was unable to get a shot of him. They much be feared in the song bird world.

Ian, the two biggest signs in this bird and these shots are the tail and the back of the head. The outside tail feathers are about the same length as the other tail feathers, sometimes giving it a squared off look. ( Cooper's outside are shorter than the others, sometimes giving a round look.) The dark color on the top of the head goes on down the back of the neck. ( Cooper's has a cap look to it, paler neck) There are other signs, but these are sometimes easier to see.

Thanks Grizz, you are right, there were no little birds around while he was present, just a red squirrel that seemed to like being adventuresome.

Thanks for that, Rex. It'll all sink in one day!

Coopers or sharp-shinned, either way i'm not posting any more of my hawk shots-it would be embarrassing! Very, very well done, Ian!

Thanks Rog, don't give up! This guy seems to make himself available to me about once a year so it'll be a while before I post any more ;)
