SDHC Cards Strategy

I have 6 years worth of SDHC cards that I am not resusing. I am keeping the cards in case of a hard drive failure. This is getting pretty expensive.

I am thinking about getting an external hard drive as a back-up. I then would erase and reuse the SDHC cards. I am assuming erased/reformatted cards have no affect on future picture quality.

I would like to hear all others manage archived pictures and the reuse of SDHC cards.

I have a Canon 60D. My Flick page is below.

I recently bought two 3G external HD's for $139 ea. One for home, one stored elsewhere. I have approx. 75,000 images on each, probably half of those RAW, and still have a ton of space left. It never occurred to me to be honest to keep buying memory cards when they became full.

Are your older SD cards going to be fast enough? I use class 10 cards in my 60D. Storage is on external hard drives, its a lot cheaper than buying SDHC cards.

Thanks- lately I have been buying class 10 cards that seem to load well.

I transfer files from my SD cards to the computer ASAP after a shoot. I never keep them on the card and I use Hitachi hard disk drives in my computer and archive system.

Formatting the SD cards is not an issue. I've always formatted both my CF and SD cards (either SanDisk or Transcend) using the computer. I don't format memory cards using the camera like so many do. Never a problem.

I always reuse my SD cards, and never reformat them. Just delete the raws after copying them to my HD for storage.

Lots of folks consider SD cards or CF cards the digital equivalent of film slides or negatives and use them for storage, Flickr or cloud storage is a good idea just in case of trojan attacks or hackers that can wipe out a lot of images on your personal computer if you use just one "place" to store your images. I download the images to external HDs and then format the cards for my next outing.
