$1250 isn't really a bargain despite how new and mint it looks....

$900-$1000 is more like it.

Personally I would go with the Tamron too instead of a mk I, or just pony up for the mk II :)

yeah i dont think its a bargain..but i think I am comfortable with it...thats what i was going to fork out 2 years back in hongkong! And as mentioned previously..i wanted to stick with Canon L and hence this one. I dont think i could justify 2200 for mark 2....

Fair enough. Personally I'd wait for a better deal. And mkII can be purchased locally for $2k flat from JBHiFi with local warranty and all. (Check whirlpool photography forum)

Wish I knew that. When I got mine the only one I could find in Brisbane as $2500.

Yeah I thought about it.. spend additional 700-800 and get the mark 2..but then for what i use, I am pretty sure I will be happy with mark 1. I already have stretched on this by almost 400 $. I was going to go and buy a 17-40. I had been looking and all good ones were around 1400 for the mark 1 and also something not clean as this one. I thought..well I was prepared to spen 1250 in 2011 for this lens and now I am spending the same money for the same year lens. The lens does look pretty well kept so I decided to not wait any further and satisfy my desire! I had to draw a line..so decided not spending 2k for the new version. And may be I could wait..but I have already waited for 2years and I am missing a bit wider than my current 50mm on my ff. I am off to camping in a firtnights time and I would appreciate something wider than 50mm. I did come across a 24-70 for 1050...the guy had no idea what the code was and he thinks its a 6 yrs Old lens. And it was well used, fair bit of surface scratches on the lens body and good. The glass appeared good though. Then this came up..i thought Another 200 more I can get a very well looked after lens and 3 yrs younger than the other one (this one is UZ code). So..yeah..a bit of muddled thought process..but I think it's a fair price based on the pictures. I will post some pics if I get the lens.

Congrat on that beautiful lens!!
You need to test the lens thoroughly as a lot of users here have soft focus problems with this particular lens.

you kidding me, I checked 3 jb's and the best price I got was 2260, bloody hell

was also looking at the tamron myself but the average af and reading lensrental article about element falling out pushed me to the II in the end...plonked down 1950 on grey last night with 1.5 year door to door warranty...decided that even if I send down to canon for calibration and they charge me I'll still come out ahead anyway should I have issue with warranty with the grey store

If you get hit with gst on the way in you may as well have just got it locally.

haha yea I know the place I bought from guarantees no gst (through their dodgy method lol)

on a separate note just noticed we have just about identical lens collection haha (except I recently sold the 24-105 to help fund the new 24-70)

You obviously are a man of impeccable taste.

Fingers crossed with customs. I've ordered loads of non photography gear from OS before and have never been hit with the GST. It sounds like they just put the value of the package at under $1000, only bad thing about doing that is if it goes missing it may not be insured for the correct value.

I'm going to sell my 24-105 too when I get around to it.

why, thank you, good sir :P

on their website they state that they get around it by sending it to their "logistic centre" here in australia first (whatever that is) so yea :-/

also paid for the optional insurance which will cover the lens should it go missing so all is well :D (and total came to 1953)

with the 24-105 i was a bit sad to see it go myself but could not justify keeping both since i don't do this for a living...
