Do you decline an assignment because you aren't comfortable in portraying and photographing a marginalized social group. Is not racial. :) Why do I have to put my political viewpoint (some says it is even a moral issue) aside to shoot a gig? Sigh..... What if my works end up to become associated with such a group?

Assignment? Who is assigning what? Is this journalism or a client?

A potential client and happened to be a friend of my other clients. :) Is an award ceremony event, indoor. I think I would do it, for the moral reasons. :)

So its not an assignment. Its accommodating a client, two different things. If you are simply providing a service its unlikely that you will be somehow associated as being politically aligned, certainly if you are being paid for that service.

Well volunteering for something you disagree with is a different matter than taking a job you don't agree with. There are very few groups that I find so abhorrent that I wouldn't work for professionally. There are many that I wouldn't work for free.

Yeah, the thing is that I don't shoot just for money anymore, not that I make a lot of money shooting gigs. I need certain amount of good will on my part to get motivated.

This may be a relief for me. They want me to capture the pre-event interior decors. Not the actual event. :) Architectural photography with low available ambient light...

If the potential client was in a "protected group" as defined by federal and/or state law, I wouldn't turn down the job by stating the reason I turned it down was the reason. But for groups that aren't protected, I can certainly choose not to take the job.

Well, then, no big deal!

As to your original question and the issues it could raise, well, sure, a fair question. If say your were being "enlisted" to take promotional photos for a group that explicitely presented a point of view that you personally just can't "endorse", well, it's a call on your part of course, but I don't think photographers are "ethically obligated" to being part of such a promotional effort...

Heck, I was invited not long ago to take some photos of half-naked women that could be "shared", and I...well, I...well I said "sure, why not":)!

I have never heard of NMBLA, so googled them. Hmmm, you picked a couple of opposite outlier groups there . . .

Hehehehe...is not race. :) Maybe I am just a bit idealistic (you have to be if you are into photography). I like to do a shoot when I have some interests in the subjects. It helps me to interact with people and clients. It helps me to feel that I belong in the event. Well, is just me.
