Here are some shots of my 1560SC. Please excuse the various pinknesses - these were shot in my daughter's bedroom! All the photos link to larger ones on Flickr.

So, the important questions then:

  • No, it's not carry-on.
  • No, you can't put a 70-200 (or 100-400) in vertically if you want the lid to close
  • In this configuration it weighs around 18Kg

The super-observant amongst you will notice that a couple of the lenses in the photo are not the labelled items. But they're close enough, and I have checked that the labelled items fit in those slots without issue.

Doubtless I could get more in here, but I don't really want to push it too hard. I'm slightly disappointed that the MacBook PSU has to go in the main body of the case, rather than in the lid. Frankly, the lid organiser isn't that impressive, apart from having the belted pouch for the laptop.

Hope that's helpful to at least someone!

^I'm looking into getting a lid organizer too but just for the extra filters and tidbits. I didn't even know they made one for laptops.

Regarding the foam cushioning in the lid. Is there some mechanism that keeps it in place normally? Mine is unsecured and keeps falling down out of the lid. I've been considering the best way to secure it...

Excellent question, I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy !
Does anyone have a solution ? Double-faced tape ? Screws ?

Hot glue worked well for mine.

It should be a snug fit in the top and not secured. For what it is worth though, I would pay the $$ and get the lid organizer. It was $20 plus shipping from Adorama for my 1510 but it was worth every penny. If you need some protection for your lenses after you get the organizer, just go to the local craft store and get some 1/2" foam and cut it to fit your needs. For me I'd only need it for the two wihte lenses I have that have exposed paint. if the lenses are on end then I see no need as anything to rub on them would be rubbing against a plastic cap.

Are you referring to the glue sticks that require a sort of gun to be applied ?
Doesn't it "melt" the foam ?

I already have a lid organizer in my 1614 and it contains all my filters, remotes, lens pens, etc...

So I didn't need another lid organizer, and I decided to go with the foam cushioning for the 1654 that contains my bodies and lenses, because I thought it would offer more protection.
I hate the fact that the foam falls down each time I open the case though.

I see why you don't need yet another organizer then. Have you tried to call Pelican? They may be able to get you a more snug fitting piece of foam. Considering the cost of the cases with or without dividers the least they could do is make sure you got good foam.

I used two strips of double-sided foam tape (it's thicker than regular double-sided) to secure my lid-foam. Just cut a couple of pieces that are about 1" wide by 3" long, space them on either side (in the middle), and whalah ..... problem solved !

And here's my Pelican 1510 which I've had about a year. I love the quality of Pelican cases, but was a little disappointed with the lid organizer. The zippers are not very sturdy, and I immediately broke the one on the right. Instead of returning, I decided to cut out that pocket and line the area with velcro. It's actually really handy and I kinda prefer it.

  • No, you can't put a 70-200
  • You could if you had the eggcrate padding in the lid. Mine shuts just fine. :D
