I came across this guy about 30 minutes after sunset in a park next to the library.I could see him but my camera was having a super hard time autofocusing. I don't know how you guys feel about flash and I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here, but I tried shooting without and they just didn't work out. I only shot a few with flash and held it off camera, trying to avoid him looking straight at it. I was going to wait him out to leave the sign, but as it got darker and darker, I left him to his business, I'm going to try to catch him in the same spot in the morning. I'm a little disappointed it was so dark, and that he chose to land on a metal sign, but I'm looking forward to finding more :) Regarding the flash, would you have shot this? Should I have given up and come back in the morning?

Excellent capture...not many people get to see these Owls. Yes, I would have taken the shot just for documentation purposes then returned during daylight hours and hopefully find it again.

Regarding the use of flash....it's up to the person. Some use it, some don't. I rely on natural light in my photo's but that's just me.

Nice snap, you should be able to see it again in the daylight around the general area. Good luck.

hey when its pitch black ya gotta use a flash sometimes. I prefer natural light but if you don't have it you gotta work with what you got.
