I have photographed women's lacrosse for eight years. This year will be my 9th.

I would like to offer a few tips which apply to all sports photography in general.

1. Shoot low.
2. Faces, action and emotion are a must.
3. "Sportraits" (portraits) are nice but remember #2.
4. The more you know the game, the better your shots will be.
5. Capture a variety of shots
6. Don't be afraid to shoot the defense.
7. Shoot...shoot...shoot and shoot some more.
8. It takes time.

I'll add that the player/face should be properly exposed, not the background.

Great tips. My favorite is the reminder to understand the sport you are shotting. Otherwise you're just shotting at people and you can't be ready for potential action. I'm doing some LAX searching now. My nephew has a practice on Friday that I am going to shoot. I am a total newb, but enjoy sports, and photography. I recently shot a marathon and because I'm a runner it definitely helped being on the opposite of the lens.

I'll need a crash course of the game play just to help understand when things are about to happen. It should be fun.

Just the basics:
T3i
18-55 Kit
55-250 kit
Tamron 18-270

Shoot the corners for offense and approx 30 yards away from the corner to get defense and offense.

Ted, I shot high school LAX last night and I always enjoy the sport. Every time I shoot I tell myself that I should learn it and shoot more.
Number 9 is a terrific study in determination. I hope she is yours, but if not, she's still a Tar Heel and that is tops in my book.
Thanks.

I love that shot too. Mine is #4 a defender.
