You could if you had the eggcrate padding in the lid. Mine shuts just fine. :D

What model? The interior specs list 9" and the 2.8 IS is a little over 9". I've been thinking about getting the 1654 which lists an interior of 10.5" depth inside which i think would allow everything to stand on end.

Here is a great use of space in a decently portable case. Its easy enough to even carry. This is a 1560 with the following items in it (starting at top left)

Row 1: 5D Mark II (Gripped would fit too in the same space), Vagabond Mini, Einstein strobe
Row 2: Canon 70-200 2.8L IS II, 2 CSXCV Receivers, Battery charger, 2 CST Transmitters, Cyber Commander
Row 3: Sigma 50 1.4, YN560, 580 EXII, Yn560.

As you can see, LOTS of space left. For those wondering how the upright lens fits, if you remove the lid padding, the case shuts without any pressure. With the lid padding (I do keep it in) the lid has to be pressed gently but Ive never been worried about anything crushing or breaking. If I were paranoid, I might remove a tiny bit of the lid padding in that area, but again, it doesnt bother me. Ive since added a 24-70 beside the speedlights, 85 1.8 under the 50, and a few more small bits in the remaining area.

Are you referring to the glue sticks that require a sort of gun to be applied ?
Doesn't it "melt" the foam ?

I already have a lid organizer in my 1614 and it contains all my filters, remotes, lens pens, etc...

So I didn't need another lid organizer, and I decided to go with the foam cushioning for the 1654 that contains my bodies and lenses, because I thought it would offer more protection.
I hate the fact that the foam falls down each time I open the case though.

On my old 1400 case I applied the glue to the plastic then pressed the foam in. I also used hot glue to glue In a strip of Velcro to the lid for securing my gorilla pod.

Anyone here ever had foam specifically cut for a Pelican case? I have some non photography gear I bought a Pelican case for and was wondering about having a company like this LINK (external link)make me a custom fitted foam insert for the equipment. I wanted to ask around here to see if any of you had any suggestions as to what company to go with and how much it costs.

I recently had a pelican case refitted to house four Alienware laptops. Due to time constraints, I was forced to go with a local shop that did little more than take some measurements, order the foam, and adhere the rectangular pieces into the case. To my surprise, the cost was quite higher than I expected, nearly $500 due to the cost of petroleum.

Wow thats crazy too expensive. Well, once I get all the gear in and layout a 2D CAD of what I need Ill send it out and get some quotes. If its crazy expensive Ill just be sticking with the pick N pluck foam I guess, or buy sheets of poly foam and cut them myself. That being said, are there any adhesive sprays or good ways of making the Pelican pick n pluck foam last longer and/or stronger?

I have used rubber cement for repairing or resecuring the pick and pluck foam with good results.

this thread was really useful in helping me choose a peli case for the Nikon D600 i just bought... so thanks everyone for contributing

here's pics of what i ended up with. its a Peli 1450 with the padded dividers. i'm trying to keep this kit super minimal so right now i just have a 35mm F2D & a 60mm F2.8 Micro. i've got a 20mm F2.8D i found cheap on the bay which i'm waiting to be delivered. and trying to hold back from getting a 50mm F1.4D and a 85mm F1.8D.

excuse the crappy pics - with the D600 in the case i only had a D40 lying around to take these with.

rigors (welcome to the forum), is that d600 gripped? Do you think a gripped body could fit in that 1450 in the same orientation you have it?

I can't speak to the D600, but I have the 1450 case for my canon gear. I had a gripped XSi that wouldn't fit well in the horizontal orientation, but fit great in the vertical orientation. The camera stool on the end with the right side up, I built up the bottom under the lens with foam to make it sit level. The gripped body was the reason I moved from the 1400 to the 1450.

Hmm, well I am looking for a hard case that I can keep my gripped 7D and my 70-200 attached. That would mean the body needs to be in the vertical position. I also do not want a rolling case. I just need it barely thick enough for the camera but can still be carried, not rolled. I'm not that exists.

I don't know why the body needs to be in the horizontal position to have the lens attached. I had my gripped XSi with 70-300 attached in the case with the camera in the vertical position. To prevent any strain on the lens or body I filled in the area under the lens with 1/2 inch foam, leaving the entire length of both camera and lens supported. Even with my 60D I still use 1/4 inch foam under the lens to support it better.

I misspoke. I meant vertical. In other words; I would like to have my gripped 7d and 70-200 attached fit into a pelican case that does not have rollers just like rigors has in his picture.

I just went and looked at my gear. While the XSi fit on it's side, my 60D is too tight for comfort on it's side in the 1450 case. Your 7D would not fit.

I would think the 1520 or 1550 would be deep enough, but they are also fairly large.

hey - thanks for the welcome! :)

the d600 barely fits in without the extra battery grip, so i think no chance of having it in the same orientation with this case, or the 1500, once you add the battery grip on there.

after the 1500 the weight starts to go up on peli's significantly (from what i've seen), so if i was you i'd bite the bullet and get the 1510. its much deeper and you dont have to use the wheels. but i'd bet that you would... ;)

to be honest the configuration of the padded dividers in the 1450 kinda cuts your options in terms of where you can put the camera. if i'd known that before buying it i probably would have gone for the 1500 and had the extra space.
