Theron. Great shots. Clarity and colors are spectacular. Do you do any post processing to help get the player/background separation or just rely on the shallow DOF at the 2.8 to 3.2 range? Any in-camera sharpness or saturation settings? I picked up a 5DMrkIII in the fall but have only shot football (at night and at Ford Field) and wrestling, all without flash, and am looking for any tips to speed the learning curve as the snow starts to melt here in Michigan. Thanks.

I don't change anything in the camera. The only thing I change is the AF settings. I use case 4.
As far as post, I add vibrance in LR and push up the sharpness to around 50 with a mask of 20. Everything else is the camera and lens.

When I seen the second pic I had a flash back of playing Hoover back during my playing days. Some 20+ years ago and the field still looks good. Thanks for the great photos and the flashback....

Shot my first game of the season Friday and first with the 5D3 under lights vs. using the 7D last year.

Finally! Baseball season is here in the Eastern Panhandle. First game of the season for me. I need to knock some rust off. Washington defeated Martinsburg easily Friday afternoon 11-3. Some shots from the game.

Pat, the shutter count is almost irrelevant. For instance, it is rated for 300k but the shutter mechanism can fail prematurely of go over that count. I have Mk IIn and the III, once you have a pro body in hand you want nothing less. I had to replace the shutter in my MKIIn three months after I purchased it…$270 later(2 years later) still pleased it's a new camera. The MKIIn's shutter is just as fast as the III. The IIn during the day is next to impossible to tell from the 7D without looking at the exif. Actually, I like the older mks during the day over the 7. They both lock on and stay on target consistently. I don't think you can get an accurate shutter count on the Mk III or the 7D.

Aside from sending the camera to Canon, there is no utility to accurately determine 1DIII shutter count.

I like to get a half body with some dead space in front of the pitcher. Later in teh afternoon or early mornign you can get the light under the cap (or overcast days). Loose a lot of detail to lift the faces from under the cap in bright mid day sun.

First timer here. Second game I've been to, but really the first real chance to photograph cause I didn't get access to the dugout on the previous one and had to shoot through the fence.
