IMO, one of the toughest shots in all of photography...

Perpendicular
High Speed
Long Glass
Slow Shutter

Luck plays a big part. The frames on either side of this one went straight in the trash! :(

The angle is deceiving...

The F-16 is about its own length length behind the Mustang plus, they are breaking away from each other so no, it's not particularly dangerous.

Both the civilian pilots in the warbirds and the military pilots in the jets have hundreds of hours of formation time.

Got to try out this lens shooting lacrosse tonight... can't lie and say a 400 2.8 woulda been better for the extra stop of light... but damn first time using something more than a 300mm and I love it...

I shot these in the fall at the New Jersey Shore at Stone Harbor.

5D Mk II, 500mm F/4L IS USM (of course), Gitzo 3530LS carbon fiber tripod
Wimberley II gimbal head, tweaked in LightRoom 4.

More here and a story:

For a description of how I purchased this lens used, and some of the problems I had, click here... I hope you find this information valuable if you are considering buying one of these beautiful lenses used:

Thanks Jay - thankfully the bird life in Aus is somewhat more varied and interesting (and accessible) than what the RAAF offers to us in Perth. I was clearly spoiled rotten concerning the aviation side of things in the UK (airshows in particular) so, yup, birds it is.
