Tokyo & Yokohama

You've got to go up Mori Tower in Tokyo at night. Daytime, of course, is good too, but nighttime views are spectacular and you can take endless shots of Tokyo from above - from 180 degree angles. In Yokohama go to the Landmark Tower in Minatomirai. Same amount of awesomeness.

The rest depends on how long you are planning to be there and how you are planning to spend your time. But the two locations above are an absolute must.

You should also go to Odaiba. And you will have a great view from World trade center Tokyo

Thanks, I was checking out the Flickr Tokyo HDR group and saw your guys' shots there as well. Very nice!

I assume the shots from skyscrapers are from observation decks/floors where you have to shoot through glass and can't bring in a tripod?

Mostly yes.. but on Moritower there is a Skydeck (the roof) there is no glas in your way.
You cant use tripod.. but you can use gorillapod.

You can use a tripod at Landmark Tower and at Tokyo Tower. Mori Tower - depending on luck. Large professional ones are a no-no. A small portable one will be very handy and no one will say a word, though.

I have a Pedco Ultrapod 2. Haven't tested it out yet, but it should be ok. Easy to carry in a bag also.

I also have a Manfrotto arm thing that clamps to a post or a table. Kinda heavy tho.

The roof of Mori Tower also has these rails with "flat spots" where you can rest your camera to get a long exposure. I was careful and had my hands just around the camera just in case. The angles aren't always good, but I fixed that in post processing. But like the others said, you should be fine with a gorillapod. They make you check in your bags and tripod, etc if you have one.

I took my Gorillapod DSLR zoom with me. it served me so well. you can bend it around rails. so convinient. especially at places like Moritower.

Actually they didnt check my bag at all. but a friend told me you cant bring a tripod up there

yes, Z32 as in VG30DETT =) They made me go up the escalator to the coat check to check my bag and tripod. And yes, I took my DSLR and gorillapod up to the roof, but mostly shot off the "flat spots" on the rail.
