#9 - Not too far from the park is one of the best swimming spots on the Deschutes River. A 15 foot waterfall called Steelhead Falls has cliffs surrounding a deep pool, and is the perfect place to come after a day of climbing in the summer. The falls are also super fun to kayak over.

#10 - A view showing the fish ladder on the left. It doesn't get any use since a downstream dam has pretty much made salmon a thing of the past.

Wow. Cool photos! What a beautiful location Neil.

Loving your images too Levina. We are also having problems with that cold weather. Snow everywhere again today. My youngest should be on a bicycle BMX race training camp this week, but it is cancelled as the track is under snow!!
6 months of winter is toooo much.

Neil, loving your images. That is such impressive, majestic country! Especially for someone like me, from a totally flat country, those views are amazing. I could see the monkey's face very clearly by the way. A good name for that formation. :)
And aren't those panos great? I thought they were legit and it's what I do when 50mm is too long to get the shot.

Some very good looking waterfall shots there too. Taken with one of those filters, right? I am a simple bird photographer and have never done shots like that. I would like to try it sometime though. But great shots, Neil. I'm very much enjoying Bend, Oregon!

Neil.. Fantastic views of Bend, Oregon.
Looks like a place for great outdoor activities... fly fishing on the Deschutes perhaps?
Love all of the panos really gives a good sense of size and space!
Neil... looks like you must have done some hiking and climbing to get these shots.. Well Done!

Today that cruel wind we've been having lately was blowing a whole lot less and with the sun shining I went to the park where I shoot most of my birds. The park is called Flevopark and it is literally just around the corner from where I live.

Plans to build the park became solid in 1908 but it wasn't until 1928 that construction began. For a city park it is pretty big. It has lots of streams, meadows and ponds. There is also a municipal swimming pool on its grounds as well as a Jewish cemetery.

The park houses a great variety of birds, from the common ones to the not so common ones (although the latter are more difficult to find obviously).

Anyway, as I come here all the time, I thought it would be nice to take Nifty there. However, it is a real pity that the park looks so pitiful at the moment. Instead of a park in Spring colours it looks almost dead as everything is brown and bare. But that can't be helped. I thought going out late afternoon would warm up things a bit and it did, but brown is still brown...

#1 This is the Small Pond (I stitched a few shots together for this one)

#2 You can often find swans here. (I liked the reflections in this shot)

#3 This used to be a Pumping Station (Gemaal in Dutch) for over a hundred years. Now it houses a distillery and tasting room (Proeflokaal in Dutch).

#4 A 25 shot pano of the central meadow. In the summertime this is full of people enjoying themselves. Especially in the weekends whole families come here to picnic, barbeque and what not. The low sun is casting its long shadows...

#5 The Jewish Cemetery. It has not been in use since 1942 but in accordance with Jewish law the graves have not been cleared. It is situated on the west side of the park and inaccessible to visitors. The city of Amsterdam owns the grounds now. The cemetery dates back to 1714.

#7 This is Valentijnkade, a canal that's adjacent to the south side of Flevopark, here on the left. This canal is always worth a visit as you can often find interesting birds here. A couple of Great Crested Grebes reside here e.g. The person off center and to the right in the pic is somebody with a camera and a long, black lens...
Those are Tufted Ducks by the way. Quite a few of them around at the moment.

#8 At the north edge of the park is the Amsterdamse Brug (Bridge). The concrete pillars beneath the road leading up to the bridge are a canvas for street artists. I know that a lot of people don't like graffiti, but there are some great works of art here and I take this over ugly, grey, massive pillars of concrete any day!

There was an artist at work and I had a bit of a chat. Very friendly chap.

Thanks! And yeah, just two shots. That's the best view I can get from the roof.

Depending on the season there can be good variety of birds. During the winter it's just the ducks and geese. Here's a shot of one that was pestering me while I was there. Despite signs saying "don't feed the birds", everyone does which has created very annoying birds.

I just wanted to show Nightdiver that we don't export ALL our annoying Canada Geese. We keep some here to annoy the tourists. ;)

Funny, I've never been there and didn't recognize the pics as amsterdam :D

The bridge does look familiar :)

It truly is dramatic scenery here, and this is one of the first times I've done panos. VERY helpful and even better than having a wider lens in some cases. The waterfall shots used an ND filter, which I highly recommend, even for general use. I'm not much of a landscape person, and mostly use NDs for portraiture.

Thanks Joayne, and yes, there is fly fishing on the Deschutes, as well as several other nearby rivers. It's the new "thing" around here, right up there with stand-up-paddleboarding. I wish I had done some climbing, but I was carrying my four month old, so just hiking that day. There's a steep trail that goes right over the top of the rock formations.

 Thank goodness. We have too many already. Forget about walking barefoot in any of our downtown parks!

Great series Levina. Educational as well, regarding Jewish cemeteries. The tall grass makes it sort of spooky, but also very emotional.

Thank you so much, Neil! Amsterdam has a rich and of course also tragic Jewish history. This particular cemetery is being renovated by both Jewish and Moroccan youngsters who work on it on Sundays.
