I don't know when Canon plan to update this for the newer, high-resolution bodies (after all, they've updated their 24-70, 70-200, all their superteles and many other lenses) but I know it'll sell like hotcakes.

Cost notwithstanding, a 200-400L or 500L is large, heavy and bulky, and something you'd only take along for a dedicated wildlife shoot. A 100-400L Mk II, on the other hand, is something every travel photographer could pack as part of their regular arsenal.

I agree. Keep it light and compact, and give it 70-300L image quality throughout the range, and I know I'd be in line for it.

unless it comes in at a reasonable price I'll be keeping the old 100-400 - still does a good job!

so much for a Olympics 2012 release. :-( wonder when Canon will finally update this one.

I don't think it will ever happen. It'll be waaaay outta my budget though. I can't even afford the current one.

it will happen eventually but I'm satisfied with the current 100-400 (and the price)

My first copy was soft, took it back and my present copy is sharp enough for me, as long as i do my job. However i cannot place a filter on mine or image quality goes right out the window. I will upgrade if the price is reasonable, otherwise my current does what i need it to do.

Hopefully major improvement. The only images that I have seen that I would consider the lens is with my friends 1DX. Just not a lens on my radar.

Has this lens been a CR2 in the past?

Wow. That will be a big jump in price though if they're hinting $2500 range. Optics better be superb + 5 stop IS for that kind of increase.

I've never heard of 5 stop IS. I thought 4 was the maximum but I don't exactly keep up with the spec on every lens. I'm sure the optics will be better and of course the IS would be updated, but I'm guessing it will go from the present two stop to the current 4 stop. I get great results with the one I have now. If the optics are better and the IS is doubled, I have no doubt it will be an excellent lens. How can it not be when the current lens has taken beautiful pictures by thousands of photographers.

THE ONLY QUESTION IS: Is Canon going to try and rake in the dough and sell a $2400+ Lens. If so I'm probably out and will have to keep the one I have.

If this really does happen then I'll be in line to get one right after I pick up a 5D3 later this year.

Of course it's going to come in at a higher price point, just like the updated 70-200 did. I don't know why anyone would think a brand new product is going to come online at the same price as a 20+ year old product. The price will come down over time, just like the 70-200 and the 5D III have done, but they're certainly going to start higher.

Whether the improvements are enough to justify spending the "new" price or not is certainly something that will have to be considered, and if sales are slow enough due to that price, it will drop faster in order to reach the sales numbers Canon is hoping to see.

I'm certainly happy enough with my 100-400 that a MkII would have to have a spectacular jump in IQ and/or features for me to drop 2500 on it. Once the price gets down around 1800-1900 I might consider it.

This lens being released makes more sense than the CR2 200/2 and 800/5.6
