Love me some primes. I can get most of everything I want from my 35L and 135L. Here are shots with each:

I started using Primes in earnest in 2012 and I feel the need to finally come forward and admit that I'm completely hooked. I cannot get enough of Primes, their fast aperture, and the color, contrast, and clarity they provide.

Totally addicting in every way!

Well well. I was due to hit the Alps in February for two weeks of snowboarding and wanted to came the camera with me, but all I had to use was the 50mm 1.8 which I knew wasn't going to be wide enough. With funds low and little time to act, I scoured ebay and picked up a bargain Miranda 28mm lens with canon EF adapter ring. It was cheap and wide so it would tide me over until a EF 28 1.8 comes along.

For the price it was a bargain and performed well, although I found dealing with the manual aperture a bit of a PITA - somewhat less so the manual focus but even that caught me out quite often. Overall it was better than nothing and I did get some decent shots from it. I'm definitely glad I had it with me on the trip.

Since I got back I've been really wanting to get the canon 28mm f/1.8 though and while watching ebay for bargains (cashflow a bit tight at the moment) I came across a Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 which I manged to get for around £40. It was advertised with 'some fungus' which I have steralised and cleaned and hopefully banashed for good, and it's not performing wonderfully. The build quality is shocking compared to the 50 1.8, but at that price I'm not complaining.

The downside is that I'm probably not going to like going up to 28mm after using this which means an upgrade is probably going to lead me to a 24 1.4L at some point. Not a bad thing in itself but the wallet will surely suffer.

Aaaanyway, point being I now have 2 prime lenses. It will be a 100 2.8 macro next.

Your DoF scale on the lens is your friend. In really bright light like you were in just pre focus using the scales and point and shoot. If you are at say f/16 your DoF on a 28mm lens would be about 3 1/2 ft to infinity. Just pre focus and shoot away. ;) And if the light isn't changing no need to change you aperture or shutter speeds. No auto focus in the world faster than pre focused.

Oh and a shameless plug. All are invited. Bring your friends. Should be a good time.
Also shot with prime and were every image (35 images) in the exhibit also shot with primes. Either 24 or 35mm.

I recently picked up a Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 AI-s for my film bodies but I decided to try it out on my 5D as well. Works pretty well hand-held.
