i did a comparison and some test-shots today with both my 50mm 1.4 @ 1.4 and my 50mm 1.2 @ 1.4, http://www.bjornlifoto.no/50L_vs_50-1.4/ (external link)
its always sharper with 50 1.4, 50 1.2 always has a hazy /foggy feel to it.. this baby is going in for calibration/repairs/whatever

and when it actually is sharp, it looks like it backfocuses slightly

Have you micro focus adjusted the 50L yet? It makes a huge difference. From your recently sample shots I think you are right about the back focus. As long as it is consistent then you can compensate in camera with MFA. If the focus is not consistent then you have to sent it in. You 50/f1.4 looks like it is front focusing a bit. It could also benefit form MFA.

What focus mode do you have enabled with your 5D2? Single point or 9 point full auto?

Have you tried taking shots at f/8, for instance, to compare image quality, and not necessarily sharpness. See if you are still getting that hazy look.

Looking at the three images from the spike it is obvious the 50L is not that sharp. Regardless where the focus is.

Still think it is back focusing though. I still recommend trying MFA. It's free after all.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

Personally I'd say -19 is the most in focus.
