WHat do you guys think of this lens on a 7D as opposed to the new 30mm f/1.4 that' s coming out "soon"? What would be the benefits of this one above the other "less expensive" one? Besides the fact that it's FF compatible if one decides to go that route in the future?

^ I dunno. If it's as good, and you don't plan on going to FF in the future, it might be a good idea since it will most likely be half the price.

But, as I've experienced, whenever I go for the "cheaper alternative", I find myself lusting for the step above I passed up on...

The past sigma 30mm is soft on the corners, so that might be something to research. And it's always a good idea to pick up ff lenses if you think you'll be investing in a ff camera in the future. Also with how the market is going ff is probably the way to go.

Always? Why spend extra money on something that you don't need right now? I understand buying the S35 if you decide the IQ is worth it, but buying the 30mm now and then selling it if/when you upgrade to FF should certainly be considered. Lenses hold their value VERY well, I've sold some for more than I paid for them. The older 30mm was no slouch, and its performance on crop sensors was just slightly behind the Sigmalux on FF. I expect the new one will be even better, but I agree that research should be done before purchase.

Agreed. However I sold my old 30mm f/1.4 and will be buying either a) the 35 or b) the new 30.

How much difference are we talking about in the 5mm - an additional step back when compared to the 30?
