Thanks. Oh, there are so many bird opportunities in AZ, I wouldn't consider leaving your 300 behind. This was actually with the 500/4 + 1.4X @ 700mm, but lots to be had with shorter.

I'll still have the 100-400 (I think). I have such little free time I think I'll concentrate on Landscapes. Might hit the Botanical Garden Friday after I land.

The 100-400 would be a good choice. I have done lots there with my 400/5.6. Just got the 500 last week. There are lots of birds at the Botanical Garden and we have a great zoo which is right next to the garden.

Becca, I had the same issue with my 40D a couple of years back, luckily at the tail end of a Maine vacation featuring a Puffin trip, so I didn't miss any shots (I didn't have a backup)

My local camera guy replaced the shutter and the damage was around $250, but I've heard people have paid less.

The good news is he also gave me a broken T-50 that I sent in to buy my 7D thru the Canon Loyalty plan, and now the 40D is a well loved, trusted back up.

Back at work in New England, but got out to DBG, Lost Dutchman, Lake Pleasant (AM) and a Jeep tour just West of where we were staying (headed North on N. Watson Rd. I believe?) Thanks to everybody for the suggestions!

Won't have time to play with them before the weekend, but I uploaded a few into Picasa just to see what was there and thought I'd post one thats a bit different.

Turns out I went birding after all..... Gila Woodpecker (on what I believe is an Organpipe cactus?) in the Desert Botanical Garden. Didn't seem spiny enough for a Saguaro, ID help greatly appreciated!

Nice Shots Rick. Have one of the overall view of that cactus? Could still be a saguaro but I'm not great with plant life here so not 100% positive

Thanks Ryan! Nope, I took one shot only of that scene and I barely cropped it. Odd, I usually bracket a bunch of shots with differing perspectives, but this was on my way out the front gate. Not only was I beat from the heat but had a drive to the Superstitions for the sunset on tap (and then back the hour and a half to check in to my room).

I think that's the "Strawberry Hedgehog" cactus
