More from Ottawa - Maple Syrup Season

At most of these big maple syrup operations, they use tube systems that go right into the boiling house rather than collecting manually from buckets attached to the taps. Here you can see the blue plastic tubing making it's way from tree to tree in the sugar bush. ▽

I'm amazed that that works with the tubes.
How does it flow?
You'd think that a falling branch or wandering livestock would break the hoses.
Fascinating though. Nothing like that around here.
And I'm sure I could handle that breakfast as a brunch. Might have a bad conscience after eating it though.

We had a stretch of nasty weather which I was too timid to go shooting in. Luckily, it followed up with gorgeous weather which I ventured out in.

#1 - First up is a panorama of the mountain range overlooking the town. In my first post, I pointed out a cinder cone in the middle of town called Pilot Butte. This shot is taken from the top looking west. The large peak to the left is Mt Bachelor, which is our big money ski resort.

#2 - This is an interesting veteran's memorial, which looks to be all-inclusive for veterans of all wars. It faces Mirror Pond (also an earlier photo subject), so should be a pretty serene place to sit and ponder. Unfortunately, right behind this memorial is a fairly busy road which sort of spoils the serenity.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#3 - The memorial is formed by a border of bricks bearing the relevant info.

#4 - Close up of the bricks.

#5 - Right across the road from the memorial is the dam that creates Mirror Pond.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#6 - This would be a nasty wake up call to summer time river floaters who maybe had one too many beers.

#7 - Speaking of summer time river floating, this is where the flatwater section of the river starts. About 100 meters upstream is the end of a nice class 4 whitewater run.

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#8 - One of several parks that border the river as it floats through town. This is the most popular place for floaters to start off, ending at Mirror Pond.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#9 - An activity that has blossomed in the last few years is stand-up paddleboarding. During the summer, there are loads of folks paddling back and forth on the flatwater river section. It's gotten so popular here that we even have a dedicated shop (in addition to several other places that rent boards).
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#10 - Just downstream of the parks in post 8 is a section of town called the Old Mill district. Bend used to have a lumber based economy, and a large mill operation was stationed on the river. That mill has been renovated into a shopping center.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#11 - They retained certain elements of the original mill to give the place some flavor. These smoke stacks are original, and now stick out of an REI.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#12 - Some original hardware from a mill, left in-situ.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#13 - This view is from across the river, from the lawn of our major outdoor music venue.
IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

#14 - Panorama showing the ampitheater as well as the Old Mill across the river. The way the ampitheater is situated allows lots of really good spots to hear music without actually going to the event. A popular method for a free concert is to make a dinner reservation at one of the restaurants right across the river and sit outside during a concert. I got to "see" the Shins that way last year.

I'm not sure. I only eat the stuff! ;) Actually, your question made me curious so I looked it up. I gather that the tubing system creates a natural vacuum because of the difference in pressure between the inside of the tree and the tube. Some producers use artificial vacuums which lower the atmospheric pressure in the tube and hence increase the flow.

Neil:

Your nighttime pano is spectacular.

I love seeing the shots of the river and hearing how it's used recreationally. You'll have to host Nifty again in the warmer months when the stand up paddlers and floaters are out. Great that the old mill is repurposed. That's something Ottawa seems to have missed out on. Our town was built on the lumber trade and I can only think of one small old mill that's been renovated for use as a business. Many of the others have been torn down.

The veteran's memorial is poignant and I like how you showed the closeups to bring some of the names into focus.

Thanks Julie. Yeah, it's sort of an inbetween part of the year for Bend. Too late to show the snow in all it's glory, but too early for spring blooms and summer events. Summer is definitely the time to be in Bend. Never gets too hot and there's soooo much stuff going on.

Maureen, we haven't renamed the Nifties, but, -g- got Adorama to to donate a 50mm, Killjoy got a Nifty donated..
I donated a couple and Charlie Harper has donated.. Killjoy has your nifty, I do believe. Akiwi had to take it apart to repair it, but eventually the AF went out.. We've had some people "lose" them along the way

I knew there were a few out there. Glad to hear ours is still alive :)

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Great shots, Neil. The memorial is beautifully designed with the names on the bricks like that. Quite impressive.

Hey guys! Sorry about the lack of updates. I've had a very busy couple of weeks. I'm going to take some pictures around campus, and then I'll try and get some next weekend from home and probably move nifty on.

Love the lines on these buildings..
.. but it's hard for me to believe how much snow is still on the ground!

Lovely b/w conversion on the first ;)

Thanks, Joayne. I love to shoot this building.

These were taken about 10 days ago and there's a lot less snow now. :D

That's a very photogenic building, Julie. I can see why you like to shoot it. Great pics.
