Washington Varsity were down in South Carolina this week for a tournament, so I grabbed some photos of the JV playing in an Invitational back home here.

Nice shots Theron. Love #3 - too bad you couldn't have shot it from a higher angle looking down into the circle.

That's a great idea Wilt. They have a student section that is elevated above the dugout. I'll do that at the next game. Thanks!

caught this nice play action at base yesterday, just loved the dirt flying up into the air and the way the sun's setting rays lit it up. Can't figure out the best way to showcase it due to the length of the dirt's "spray" across the width of the frame. Should I crop it tight and show the faces over everything else, or go wider? btw, I will offer the player multiple crops, this is just for my use--want to choose a single image. Here are a few options below:

and my focus locked in on the background signs, but still think it is good enough for the player to want. agree/disagree?

Personally, I would crop that a lot tighter than any of the photos you showed. The dirt spray is nice, but nothing I would purposely crop loose for. You can still see dirt flying everywhere even on a tight crop.

You have 'image editing' turned on, so I did a quick crop of how I would crop it if the image in a perfect situation (where the image is in focus and you would't be doing an extreme crop). You still get the dirt spray, but the players (the subject of the image) occupy a much larger portion of the image now. However, keep in mind that cropping tight on an image that is even a little out of focus can get ugly real quick, so you may not be able to do this in this situation.

Personally, I have found that most players/parents (or small town newspaper editors in my case) don't really notice or care if a picture is a little of of focus if the action is good. However, if for personal use you talking about posting it to your website/portfolio, I would strongly recommend only putting up work that is perfectly focused.

thanks!
I have image editing on for this reason, glad you did the edit and for the points you made. I have always done sports only for fun and family/friends, it is not part of my portfolio as of yet, so the image is just for my enjoyment, I like how it looks. I agree with you wholeheartedly never to put up on a site/portfolio anything short of your best work. You don't need any "filler" :)
That being said, I wouldn't mind learning to understand what the sports image buyer is out there looking for since I intend to do more sports with nieces and nephews getting to that age group now. Your edit helped me understand that better, so many thanks!
