I had planned to go out last weekend but caught something and had to sweat that out first. But I feel bad about not posting for a week so I browsed my Nifty collection and decided to process a few of those. So these are pretty random and unrelated images, but I hope you like them.

I plan to take Nifty out for one last grand tour and then send him on. I want to wait until next weekend though as then the Rijksmuseum will be open again after a 10 year renovation. Press reviews are cheering and I can't wait to get in. Don't know if I can though as I'm sure the whole of the country will want in, but I'm going to try very hard.
So, until then, here's some more from earlier trips. If that is all right?

#1 The windmill from an earlier set. Taken from the city side.
On the left, behind the trees is the so called Oosterkerk (Eastern Church), a 17th-Century Dutch-Reformed church that is now in use as a community center.

#2 This weird looking building is the science center NEMO. It is located at the Oosterdok in the center of Amsterdam, situated between the Oosterdokseiland and Kattenburg. The museum has its origins in 1923, and is housed in a building designed by Renzo Piano since 1997. It contains five floors of hands-on science exhibitions and is the largest science center in the Netherlands. It attracts annually over 500,000 visitors, which makes it the fourth most visited museum in the Netherlands.
It's great fun for both adults and children and not to be missed when visiting Amsterdam!

#3 I took this when visiting the Schreierstoren (posted in a previous Nifty series). The street on the left is the Gelderse Kade, on the right is the Oudezijds Kolk. It's just a nice, always busy corner with lots of things going on. And there's a coffeeshop as well.

IMAGE: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49340296831_6640d3698e_o.jpg

#4 If you walk from the Schreierstoren down the Gelderse Kade you end up at Nieuwmarkt Square. It's a nice enough square with lots of terraces like this one. The text on the sunshade (what sun?) says: in the middle of Mokum. Mokum is a different name for Amsterdam. It comes from the Hebrew word for 'place' which is Makom. The word 'makom' in Jiddish is pronounced 'mokum.' We have a great many jiddish words in our Dutch vocabulary and this is one of them. So we often refer to Amsterdam as 'Mokum'.

#5 And of course in the Netherlands there's no escaping him...

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2ib2UCK (external link) 20130317_5D+Nifty_354 (external link) by Levina de Ruijter (external link), on Flickr

#6 Sometimes it's a good idea to look up. A giant faucet high up on a wall and for no apparent reason...

IMAGE: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49339839373_36483a1424_o.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2iaZzgK (external link) 20130317_5D+Nifty_226 (external link) by Levina de Ruijter (external link), on Flickr

#7 This is a panorama of one of the eastern Harbour islands. The long buildings are old storehouses turned into living quarters. I should have photographed them from the other side really to show that these buildings bear the names of the days of the week: Sunday, Monday, etc...
I shot this against the setting sun as you can clearly see.

#8 I thought it a good idea to take Nifty into the supermarket. Well, I did and took a test shot. As I was checking the histogram one of the store's lackeys hurried towards me and informed me I was not allowed to take pictures. So all I have is this one test shot. I do wonder what it is they are afraid of though...

Another fine set of travel log Levina!
Love the Nemo, it looks like Frank Gehry architecture (The Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles)

That first photo with the windmill is stunning. The soft light and color make it look like a painting.

You've got some really interesting sights and you captured them well.. Please keep Nifty until the Rijksmuseum opens.. It's been getting rave reviews in the USA!

Thanks very much, Jo. I'm quite pleased with that first image myself. Light was lovely then and that makes such a difference.
The NEMO is an amazing museum. All kinds of interactive stuff going on there. Great for kids too. The design of the building is totally outrageous and fun.

The Rijks is getting rave reviews everywhere it seems. I read a few of them, including Simon Schama's review in the Financial Times (I'm such a fan of his!). So yeah, I really really want to get in.

I like number three most, but that's probably because there is an Irish pub in the street on the right side (oudezijds kolk) where I've consumed a significant amount of beers over the past few years :D

Levina:

I love that first image too. As Joayne said, the soft colors are so appealing.

The NEMO building is outstanding. Is that an amphitheatre on the roof?

Your black and white street scenes are lovely. Maybe we should all sit down for a coffee before we head to the Rijksmuseum? ;)

Ah no, that is not an amphitheatre on the roof of the NEMO. There is a cafetaria and a play area for children. And of course you get a fantastic view of the city. Sometimes though when the weather is bad, the area is closed as the roof is very high up and it could be dangerous then.

I have a few more shots of the museum from a different angle and I will process one that will show you how the ship form of the building is played with on a different level. Very clever and very cool. You'll see.

Thank you for the nice comments, Julie. I'm glad you liked the shots. And yes, having a coffee would be very nice. Because they *do* actually have coffee at coffee shops, you know! :D

It's a lovely day, so I decided to take nifty with me for my walk to class this morning.

Here's one of the new suites. They just finished building it last year.

IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/n7GOhim.jpg

A view down the sidewalk. You can see the other suites in the background. This sidewalk is blindingly bright when the sun hits it.
IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/9vA6cjX.jpg

A look over a the building where I spend all of my time.
IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/08Z2gXg.jpg

And a look back at where I live. It looks tiny compared to the new suites.
IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/s5OgsGr.jpg

Just about to head inside for one of my most boring classes ever.

Just what are you studying that you need a smokestack for that building?
Nice campus tour, we need to see more ;)

Hah, that's the power plant.

I'll take some more this week or this weekend. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot here. It's a fairly small campus.

Today I went out to buy a new camera bag and brought Nifty with me as the camera shop is close to the Amstel River. This river runs through Amsterdam from north to south (and a bit beyond). The river's mouth is where the river meets the IJ bay. However, in 1936 the last part of the river (called Rokin) was filled in, so the river now ends at Munt Square, although it remains connected to the IJ through subterranean pipes.

Amsterdam took its name from the river. The city developed out of a small fishing village called "Amstelredam", built in the 13th century alongside a dam at the mouth of the river. The town was granted city rights around 1300. The hamlet developed into the small town "Amsteldam", which later became "Amsterdam".

A nationally televised concert is held on the river every year on Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day). The rowing races Head of the River Amstel and Heineken Roeivierkamp ("rowing foursome"??) are held on the river annually. The river also forms part of the route of the Canal Parade, Amsterdam's annual floating gay pride parade.

Amstel beer is named after the river. The Amstel brewery, as a lot of other breweries, was situated close to the Amstel river because clean river water was used to produce the beer.

The Amstel is a beautiful river with many bridges, some of them even famous, like the Magere Brug. And of course it was depicted in works of art by artists such as Breitner, Rembrandt and Mondriaan. Also some renowned buildings are located at the banks of it, like the Theatre Carré, an old, beautiful theatre where you will see only the best artists perform. There is also the Amstel Hotel, a luxurious 5-star hotel where the greats of the earth stay when visiting Amsterdam. The Stones, George Clooney and Brad Pitt all stayed here to name just a few.

#1 The Amstel River really deserves some good light and a blue sky, but none were available today and with Nifty I obviously can't wait for better conditions, so this will have to do. Taken from the Berlage Brug in Amsterdam-South and facing north. A stitch of 3 images.

#2 Maybe training for the annual rowing competition... Light from this angle was even worse so I converted it to B&W which helps a bit.

#3 Turning to my right (still on the Berlage Bridge) we have a view of the rowing boats in their little stables. Talk about nifty! :)

#4 And then there were these. They are all over the city at the moment, welcoming people in all the languages of the world.

By the way, the Rijksmuseum opens next Saturday, 13 April. Nice thing is that the museum will be open from noon till midnight and admission is free. So I'm going to try to get in. Don't know if I will be able to take shots though as that is not exactly allowed but the 5D + 50mm is a small package and will fit in a normal hand bag, so I'm gonna smuggle it in and will take shots surreptitiously. Or try to at least!

I also promised a bit more on the NEMO Science Center.

The NEMO is basically built in the water on top of the IJ-tunnel (an automobile tunnel that runs under the IJ Harbour and connects the city of Amsterdam with its northern parts). But as the architect of the NEMO, Renzo Piano, designed the building as a boat and the lower part of that boat is just above the entrance of the tunnel, it is like entering the cargo deck of a ship when you drive into the tunnel. How cool is that?

It's unfortunate that maintenance was going on when I was there but it also allowed me to actually stand where I stood when I took this photograph.

This one is taken from a slightly higher standpoint where you can maybe better see how the entrance to the tunnel looks like a lower deck or cargo deck of the NEMO ship.

Levina: Wow, there are a lot of boats in those bunks. Amsterdam must like boating as much as biking. Thanks for showing the other views of NEMO - those angles really do show how it is designed to suggest a cargo ship.
