Nice work guys!!..anyone else growing dissatisfied with their 7d. The autofocus is starting to really get on my nerves and it keeps freezing up at the worst times...anyone else having the same problem?

I sold my 10mp 1D mkIII to buy the 7D,, that was the worst mistake I ever made.

I grew to loathe my 7D AF for sports,,, after 50k+ shots and every combination of CFn I could think of, I rented another 7D body just to see if I had a 'bad copy' ,, I didn't,, it was just as bad. It didn't lock-up or anything like you're experiencing,, it just wasn't fast or accurate enough. I was never in love with the IQ either,, no matter what the lens, the photos just didn't 'pop'.

I loved the handling and ergonomics of the 7D,, and the 7D AF is better then any X0D or Rebel,,, but it's not even close to the 1D series' AF,,, even the 10 year old 1d mkII kills the 7D every time.

I did get some beautiful portraits from my 7D,,, and I always thought the high ISO performance was excellent (something a lot of folk disagree with) but as an action shooter,,, I give it a thumbs down. I sold my 7D and got an old 1D mk II,,, even with 10mp less resolution,,, I'm getting killer images and a keeper-rate at least triple what I was getting with the 7D.

Just my experience,,, YMMV

Keeper rate!!..you said it right there!!...I'm getting tired of taking 300 pic's just to get a few shot's that are in focus. Could just be bad technique on my part also. But I suspect I started to become more dissatisfied itwith after I received my 5d mk II. But since wildlife is what I'm into I really want that extra focal length....Nikon??...maybe.

I've never shot Nikon,, and I know they make fine camera systems,,,, but don't abandon Canon yet.

Beg, borrow or steal a 1D II or 1d III for a weekend,,, or if you can live without fast burst and high ISO,, then maybe try an old 1DS II or 1DS III (they all have pretty much the same 45 Point AF). I promise,,, you'll never settle for anything less than a 1D body again.

All that aside,,,, you're doing a damn good job with your 7D and birds. The Bluebird and Canada goose pics you recently posted are both as-good as anything I've ever seen shot on the 7D,, even more remarkable that you're getting these shots with the sharp but very slow 100-400L.

What do you mean by freezing up? I don't shoot BiF very much, but I've used it for aircraft and sports a lot and never experienced it freezing up. I use it alongside a 1Ds2 and find the AF performance similar, although I'd probably give the edge to the 7D due to the extra modes, in particular spot AF. I've also had a 1D3 along the way, and the AF is improved on that. It's so quick to acquire and tracking is good. If I was getting 95% with the 1D3, I'd put the 7D around 85% with the 40D/50D I also had around 60%.

It may be the settings you are using, don't be afraid to take the tracking sensitivity to fast as that setting will avoid any freezing up, makes the camera respond immediately. And try changing tracking method to continuous AF track priority.

Isn't there a seeing that prioritizes taking the shot vs being in focus? So even if in rapid fire mode, it may hesitate between shots if the image is not in focus??

I love how a bunch of excellent sports pics, always seem to follow someone complaining that they can't use their 7D for sports... ;-)a
