The ones I own:

18-55mm(never gets used, maybe once a year)
28mm 2.8(every day walk around lens on the crop)
50mm 1.7(used as a normal on my full frame, no real use on the crop anymore)
35-80mm 4-5.6(studio lens, mostly when I need portraits)

Sold my 100mm and 100-200(I need to replace them ASAP)

Dream lineup I want eventually:

14mm 2.8 Samyang
35mm 1.4 Sigma or Canon
50mm 1.7 Cosina(own it already and love it, they make Zeiss and Voigtlanders lenses for a reason)
85mm 1.8 Canon
70-200 2.8 (Canon, sigma or tamron.... with a 2X)

That setup could last me a lifetime!

Everything seems to indicate that the Sigma 35 is the superior offering, especially given the pricing and warranty considerations.

For that samyang/rokinon/bower 14mm you get, be sure to look into good focus confirmation chips. Not a necessity given that you can just stop down and never worry about focus anyhow, but it is nice having limited EXIF data with your images.

I am extremely happy with just a 17-40L and a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mkII. The 24mm TS-E is a much adored bonus. It completes my current "perfect" 3 lens setup. Add the 100L and a supertele like a 500mm or 600mm f/4L IS and I'd be very happy. I love the supertele range for birding and wildlife, but can't really afford to move into it.

Amazing how tastes change. I traded the 24mm TS-E for a 300mm f/4L IS. I'm also wanting to probably get rid of the 17-40L now too...

I guess that makes my new ideal 3-5 list:

24mm f/1.4L II
100mm f/2.8L IS Macro
70-200mm f/2.8L IS II

I would probably throw in the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS as a general usage type lens. I never use mine and would not ever really miss it for any reason, but I still feel like I need it for some reason. Just in case.

My 5th lens would still be one of the white super tele lenses. At least 400mm or longer. I would also go with the Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 HSM. The only thing holding me back on that one was that it doesn't have OS.

5D4 or 6D2..... Waiting to find out which I buy | 8-15L |24-70mm f/4L IS | 24L II | 40mm pancake | 100L IS | 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mk2 | 400mm f/4 DO IS

24-105L
16_35L
70-200 f4L
100_400L
100L macro

Luckily I already have these and they represent the best combination for my use.

17-40L
24-105L
50L
100Macro
<tele><-- currently missing. Leaning toward picking up a 200 f/2.8 and 2x TC for my first big camping trip of the season; but will be a last minute decision.

I tend to leave 50L on body around people; 24-105L for generic wandering. (Or 40 f/2.8 if weight matters)

Realistically, this is what I think I could have at some point:

24-105 f4L
28 1.8 (though I wouldn't mind that siggy 35 :)
85 1.8/100 2.0
70-200 2.8L IS

Paired with a ff and a crop, and I've got covered what I need.

Maybe if I could also have both teleconverters....

17TSE
24-70II
70-200II
50L
500L II

But I'd still miss the 100 macro so I think I'd need at least six.

What I have in my signature seems to be good and solid for me.

I might upgrade the 70-300 and 100 macro to Ls.

I think it depends on one's focus (pun intended). My three lenses work well for most of what I do, however, if I were to become serious about wildlife photography, I would have to add some much more powerful telephoto lenses.

In my dreams, I'd add a 300 f/2.8, 500 f/4 and the 200-400 + 1.4x extender when or if it is finally released.

Oh, and I would like a fast prime but I haven't been able to select one. I'm sort of sitting on the sidelines waiting to see the results from the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art lens.

If I were to ignore my macro and TS curiosity, my standard kit would be a 4 lens combo and hopefully 2 bodies (that's what I'm saving up to at least):

  • 5D3/5D2
  • 35L
  • 85L
  • 135L
  • 70-200L F2.8 IS II

My reason being I usually shoot at >85mm, but sometimes I shoot landscape and the 35L is a good companion. Maybe adding a TC if I feel the need for more reach.
