My laptop configuration and performance..

Guys I have a question..

First off, I have a dell laptop that has a configuration of i7 3rd gen processor, 1gb ddr3 AMD graphics, 16gb ram (i guess 1333 only), and a 120gb intel 330 ssd.

One the ssd after I've installed all the apps/softwares that I want the remaining space is 50gb.

So here is the scenario and my question...

I have connected a external Hdd via Usb 3.0 and opened my .psd file which 700mb in size.

The problem is I find it slow when for example just moving from different tools using the keyboard shortcuts , the tool icon change so slow from one tool to another.

And moving just the layers up or down it takes seconds to react...

I thought specs wise im okay, that a 700mb .psd file will be easy for my laptop to handle?

Does my 16gb ram is not enough? I ask this because from the remaining 50gb space on my ssd it goes down after i've opened the .psd file and do some editing..

Is it slow also because Im working with it externally on my plugged external hdd?

what do you think can i do to improve my laptops performance?

Something's not right, it should be instant to change tools.

Can you post a screen shot of your task manager (right click on the task bar) when you're using photoshop? I want to see RAM usage, CPU usage, that sort of thing. So open task manager, look at all the tabs, use PS, then take screenshots and post them.

16GB is heaps. USB3 should be fast enough. Try moving the psd to the SSD and see if it still does it.

Thanks for replying. When I get home later I will try to do a screencap. I will also try to copy the psd file in the laptop (ssd) and see if there will be improvements.

I am also thinking that from the specs of my laptop any 700mb .psd file or higher will be just easy.

maybe because this .psd file has 15 or more layers with a mixtures of group folders?

anyway..will see later how's my taskmanager looks like..

Shouldn't matter. If you can put the file onto a web server or via yousendit or dropbox I'm happy to see how it is on my system (i7 2600K, 16GB RAM, 2xSSD so quite similar to yours), and I'll keep it private and delete it afterward. If you do that zip the psd and PM me the link, I'm New Zealand so it may take a day before I get back to you.

Is that your configuration in your laptop or desktop? mine is a laptop...

What settings in the PS prefs > performance?
What version PS?

I think on the performance prefs when I checked it the scratch disk is the sdd.

The box on where it mentioned some graphics, I think I've ticked that one..

On the Ram/Memory..I can't remember...

Anyway, what should be my settings on the performance prefs?

I'm using CS6 extended (64bit)..

It's a desktop, but it's a couple years old, so a laptop like yours should be similar power to my desktop.

Post the information I asked for, let me have the PSD, and we'll be able to narrow it down. Without it I can't help further.

Interesting. CPU is basically at zero, memory is half full - using 7GB is an achievement.

Can you please do some processing with task manager open, go to the process tab, and show me memory usage. Sort by memory used.

The other question is I/O. If you click the resource monitor on the performance tab of TM you can have it tell you how much work your disk is doing. That might be worth looking at.

I'd still like to get a look at that PSD file, to see what my machine does.

I'm going to guess that this will clear up if you move the .psd file to your local drive. If not, try turning off whatever program is using the bulk of your 7gb memory. Yeah technically you still have 9gb free, but 7 is a heck of a lot to be using so I'm curious where its going.

I guess this isn't critical, but also kinda curious where all your SSD space went. 70gb seems like a lot for OS and software. I'm on a desktop w- a ton of stuff installed and its only using 40gb.

I did a test and it was interesting..

I have a roomate who has a 2nd Gen. I5 macmini with a 16 gigz of RAM (1600mhz), 120gb kingston SSD V-something model, and with just the intel graphics card (HD3000). I connected my external HDD and opened this 700mb .psd file. I was

surprised that when I tried to move, using move tool, one of the "group" layers that I have on the .psd file layer that layer move in real time, without no delays..(just doing the up or down movements using the arrow keys on his

keyboard).

I think moving the .psd file into my local drive will help but why does his desktop (macmini) does it okay just opening it from the external hdd?

When I did the screen capture the programs that was only opened was Photoshop and google chrome with just 4 tabs open. From what I know, the programs running on the background which is on my taskbar are just the normal stuffs example: my

bamboo dock, wifi intel ek ek, the amd catalyst, datacolor from spyder calibration etc..

I did configure my startups using msconfig and unselect almost all and just left 3 or 4 programs/apps and problem is still the same.

From the size of my Hdd why it is just that it's because I have installed ofcourse the O.S., Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, I think Adobe Flash as well, LR 4.4, and NBA 2k13 and still some programs

forgot them already, this is just the "major" one's that I can think of.And from the begining It's not all 120gb, I think you know this already from 120gb when formating it before installing the O.S. it became 100 gb already (dont know

the exact size).

I still haven't done screencaps from the resource monitor. I will do it sometime this week.
The psd file it's from our company and I will try uploading it hopefully internet is fast enought when doing "uploads".I did somehow had a look on the HDD activity on the resource monitor and the write speed is "high/peaking" when I'm

doing the editing on photoshop (with that 700mb .psd file). Well I will just do the screencap for you to see and analyze maybe my term peaking is wrong.

Huh, I dunno. You could try updating your USB driver and graphics card driver. It's kinda hard to diagnose via a message board. Your best bet is prolly to find a tech-savy friend and let them dig around in person.
