Planing a trip this summer to Katmai. Thinking of using Katmaibears.com. Does anybody have any experience with this tour? It seems an interesting alternative to the Brooks river tours. Can anybody recommend any good tour experiences? I don't want to be limited to one location for a week.
I am intrigued with the idea of having a naturalist guide taking us into different areas every day, seeing a variety of areas, and a variety of bear populations but at the same time I have no experience in the park so I would appreciate any input.

I went with Alaska Adventures, www.goseebears.com (external link) I was very pleased. Dave took myself and one other photographer into the Katmai Preserve and we got "up close and personal." I'd recommend him to anyone. Here's a couple of the shots I got. You can see more at my flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/philk54 (external link)

WOW: I went to your Flickr page and saw your shots. They are fantastic. You must have some great memories. A couple of questions:

1). What time of year did you go?

2). We're your excursions with Dave on the coast, or were you inland in the Brooks River area?

Thank you. It was a fantastic trip. I went Aug 2-4. We were in the Katmai Preserve, at the confluence of Funnel Creek and Moraine Creek, east of Kukaklek Lake.

I've been on the katmaibears.com trip 2x. on the last trip there was a couple who had been 8x. I will go again w/ them eventually.

if you want the best bear experience then this is the expedition you want. John Rogers puts on a heck of a tour and has the best guides (I have been guided by all three of his current people). Brad Josephs (look up his videos on youtube), John Mitchell & Buck Wilde (google this guy, one of the most interesting men you can ever meet).

They are all into photography and care greatly about putting you in the best position to get the best photos. At the end of the day you get to go back to the main boat, have a hot shower and a great dinner each and every night (you also get breakfast and dinner).

here are some of my photos from my travels with katmaibears.com

and you are not limited to one location for a week w/ katmaibears.com. that is also part of the beauty of being on a big ship. you just move up the coast to different places for different action.

Great shots, Jason. Now I'm psyched to go again.
