Hello,
How are you?
I got offered the following deal:
A 5d classic with a 17-40 f4L lens. Both items mint.
The kit includes some other accessories like filters, tripod and photobag. All is boxed and complete.
The asking price is 1000 euros.
I know that the 5d is a 2005 camera and it will not have the same performance as a 2012 camera, but it is still capable of making great images and has a sensor capable of a great color.

For comparison, a new 5dII is 1350 body only.
A new 6d is 1400 body only or 2000 with the 24-105 kit.
The 17-40 retails for 600 or a bit more new.

So, based on this, would you take the deal?

Cheers!

Current gear:
Fuji X100S

TBH, i'd rather ditch out the extra 300 for a 5DII.

The 5D classic is still a great image producing camera. Combined with good glass you can't go wrong. Really depends how much you have or want to spend. I was using my 5D heavily for portrait work as recently as a year ago and blown away by the image quality. Alas, now that I have my 5D III it doesn't see much use but always at my shoot for a backup just in case. For portraits I still prefer it over my 7D. If you need better focusing that is another issue entirely.

I'd go 6D. The 5DII is priced too close to the 6D to even consider, and the 6D is easily worth 2x the price of the 5Dc when paired with the 24-105.
Why?
The 6D is so much easier to worth with and quite a bit better at high ISO and AF as well as Liveview and a number of other features such as weather sealing. Also, you get continued support from Canon in case anything goes wrong, and will continue to do so for quite a few years after the 5Dc is no longer supported, not to mention warranty.

Do you need 12mp camera with usable ISO max to 1600 only and not the best L glass which produces very noticible distortions at wide end?
5Dc is cheapest ticket to FF, which allows to enjoy many 50mm and other primes at thier original FoV design. Do you need this?

For your 5D-C with 17-40, no.

Really clean 5D-C's are abundant stateside $500-$650. Mk-II in varying used condition $700-$1,200 and new $1,700. So if considering a new 5D-II, the 6D has the current technology for a bit more. For economizing, the 5D-II is a very capable body and if not wanting to spend, the 5D-C.

In lenses, the 24-105 would be my suggestion in a nice combo package. The 24-70 is excellent but you may want that extra reach that the 24-105 has.

Budget rig, the 5D-C with 35mm or 40mm. The 40mm you can buy new. Should be sub $700.

1000 sounds a bit high to me, see if he'll take 800.

That camera and that lens used it's about the right price if you were buying second hand from an online store. Perhaps slightly high if you're buying privately with no guarantee.

If I were you, I'd go for the new mark II, especially when you compare your prices to our Dutch prices. Over here new Mark II's are 1610,- euros:mad:.

Cheers.

Can't comment on the lens but i bought a 5d for 450 euro last week. It has great image quality and I think its a great camera. If you want that lens its probably not a bad deal but slightly expensive. For info you can expand the iso to 3200 and though iso expansion is not recommended i found lightroom 4 cleaned them up nicely. I also think 12mp is more than enough for 99% of uses
