I have a couple 77mm lenses (70-200mm 2.8 IS II and 24-105 f4) as well as one 72mm lens (Sigma 180 f3.5 Macro). I am considering buying a B + W circular polarizer for my 77mm lenses. I just realized that there are 72-77 step up rings so I could use the 77mm filter on my 72mm Sigma.

I am curious if the extra distance between filter and lens glass adversely affects IQ, and if there are any problems in terms of difficulty in removing the filter from the step-up ring.

Anybody go this route? Would save money over buying two quality circular polarizers, as the step-up ring is about five bucks.

It'll be no problem, especially since the 72 mm φ lens is a 180 mm focal length. If it were really wide, you might get vignetting, but with even moderate telephotos you should be good. Air between filter and lens shouldn't affect IQ.

I use 58mm-77mm and 72mm-77mm step-up rings all the time on my lens to filter set ups. Never had a problem with any of them. I would suggest Marumi step-up rings if you are on a budget as they seem to be of a better quality than others that I've seen.

No problems! I second the Marumi.

Thanks a bunch, guys. I didn't realize there were step-up rings that go all the way from 58-77mm. That is great news.

There can be one problem, the lens hood. And when using a filter, the hood is even more important then ever else.
