For the bird, at a guesstimate of distance to subject of 10 feet the DOF is 1.29 feet, for a crop it would be 0.81 feet. Plenty to get a small bird in sharp focus. For the gymnast, the face would need to be sharp for me, and as the shot is faceless, I'm not sure where I would even point the camera from that angle.
So sorry that my shots aren't up to your standards, how foolish of me to take a shot from an angle that I found interesting

Another sub-par action shot from the 6D, and just for you, this time the face is very obviously in focus (even though I find the shot far less interesting than the "faceless" picture I posted before)
