Should I sell my Canon 24-70 Mk 1 to get a Tamron 24-70 VC?

I toyed with the idea of getting the 24-70 Mk 2, but the budget just cant go that high. I've used my Canon 24-70 a lot over the last 2 years, but I just feel that the image stabilization could be very useful. Especially for those times when f/2.8 wasnt enough and I had to go to ISO 25,000. Those two stops for the VC could bring me back down to a usable ISO in those cases. Anyone made a similar jump or have any insight?

Thanks.

been there, done that.

lighter, easier to handle, stabilized, sharper.

I find that even with 1/FL, I can still get blur when I view 100%. This thing can grab a whole lot of light when needed. For posed shots, I dont mind going down to 1/30s (any lower, and I capture movement by people).

all handheld

If you think the VC will come in handy, there's no other game in town. Personally, I keep the VC turned off 90% of the time. But that 10% when I want it, I'm sure glad it's there. If you've been reading reviews, I'd agree with most of them. I've been pretty impressed with the sharpness from 24-50mm and less so from 50-70mm. Not to say it's bad at the longer lengths, just not as good as the shorter ones. The focusing might not be instantaneous, but plenty fast for most things and reliable in low light situations.

@Charlie: Wow, great shots for those shutter speeds being handheld. You have moved me one step forward in the Tamron direction, thanks for the samples.

@Nightdiver13: My only other IS lens, the 100L, I also rarely use IS. However, like you said, when its needed you're glad its there.

Conclusion: I think i'll drop $50 and rent it for a few days to see how it suits me. But im sure in the long run i'll make the switch.

I usually just throw on a fast prime in those cases and use the zoom legs. I switched out my 24-70L a couple of years ago for a Tamron and don't regret at all. I still have L lenses but I find there are a lot of great alternatives out there other than Canon. Rent it, shoot it and see if you like it.
