Is the IS mechanism and is the sound normal? Not nearly as noticeable on the camera (5d Mark iii). I chatted with a tech with B & H Photo and he says it is normal on the IS lenses. The only one I have to compare to is the 70 - 200 2.8 L IS USM. and I can't here it at all on that one. He said it was due to the much thicker and metal casing.

Can any other owners of this lens let me know if I need to exchange it.

Thanks all!

Chris

Don't mean to be obnoxious, but why are you shaking it ?

I don't have this lens but I do have the 70-200 2.8 L IS USM, and have no intention of trying to find out if it rattles or not. Haven't you heard that old joke "Doc, it hurts when I do this" "Well, don't do that!" ;)

If the lens works, don't worry about it.

Not shaking it at all. Just picked it rotated it.

Anyway, the tech at B & H says it's normal and it works great.

My 100L doesn't rattle when I pick it up and in normal handling.

Cheers, Damien

I also have the 100L and it doesn't rattle either.

My 85L makes a little "shifting" sound (like one click, one rattle) when I tilt it back and forth. I've been told its normal so Im not concerned. I can feel it more than I can hear it.

Depends. Does it still work fine? Does it go away after you turn IS off?

If you unmount the lens while IS is still on it'll have a terrible rattle that sounds pretty awful.

My 100L has a slight rattle to it when I shake it, have had it for a while now and don't see it as being a problem.
