I received an email this morning from Adobe saying that registered users of Photoshop Elements were eligible to purchase Lightroom 4 for $99. However it seems that it is available to everyone and not just PSE users. Offer good until April 27th.

The promo code I received is: LIGHTROOM99

I went to the Adobe site not using the link in the email, clicked on products, then scrolled down to Lightroom 4 and clicked the Buy button. I changed the Upgrade toggle to Full and it showed a price of $99 without ever entering the promo code.

I looked into that. If you Google Lightroom 5 release date I found June 2014 which is a long way off. Others have posted that it is not unusual for Adobe to release a beta over a year before the final release. I don't know as I don't follow things like that but some posted examples of beta release dates followed by final release dates to show it is not unusual.

Adobe usually release their final version in a matter of couple of months after they get the Beta out.
If you have not done it yet, just install the trial version and hope they sell the new version a month from now.

An earlier release makes more sense. Buying 4 then paying $99 (guesstimate) to upgrade does not make sense unless you think LR5 will cost over $200. But if you want or need it now.............

Plus some think that there isn't enough of an improvement in LR5 to justify a whole number upgrade so many may be more than happy with LR4.

I would buy it now if you don't already have it. This is a good deal and Lightroom 5 is only a lightroom 4 update.... It's not going to be anything special.

LR is still sold at a decent price IMHO. I got the upgrade from version 1 for just $79.99

Lightroom goes on sale at this price or close to it every few months. It's nothing out of the ordinary.

According to the Adobe website, the LR5 beta will work until June 30th, so I would assume that the actual LR5 would come out very shortly after that.

my LR4 30 day trial expired. Was going to buy LR4 next week but now I'm thinking I just use the LR5 beta and then buy that when it comes out. if the cost is prohibitive then, I'll just get a copy of LR4 on sale.

The LR5 update appears to be worthwhile to me ...

That said, I fear that Adobe is trying to squeeze more money out of its users by going to a yearly update cycle.

Yep. While some may argue that the cost of LR has declined, more frequent releases with worthwhile upgrades counters that.

$300 for a new version of LR every 3 years.
$100 for a new version of LR annually.

I guess the argument is that we get access to improvements sooner, although they are probably fewer and less significant in annual releases than longer ones.
