I just sent off Nifty to redjamesg in Denmark (just pm'ed him about it).

I do have more shots of Amsterdam though and will be posting them in the days to come.
I'll first update the list.

At present we would like anyone wishing to host have at least a 200 post count or have been active on POTN for a year. Hopefully this will reduce the number of people that do not participate in a timely manner, or "forget" to move Nifty on to the next host, or simply don't care.

All of the most recent hosts for Nifty have set the bar pretty high. I love it. The stories, the history, and the images that back it all up.
A wholehearted thanks to you all! :)

Good news, the insurance money should be coming soon, so I should hopefully have the lens replaced in 2 weeks or so.

May also be picking up a 1DIII to replace the 1DII I lost :D

It's been weeded out. So I hear someone stole your gear... That's a bummer!

Yep. Thankfully they only took the camera and nifty. They didn't take my camera bag with pretty much all of the rest of my gear. That would have sucked majorly.

With Nifty gone I finally found the time to process some more shots.

This batch is dedicated to the Vondelpark. It is a relatively large park (120 acres) in the middle of the city. It's named after Joost van den Vondel, on of our most famous poets from the 17th century (nobody reads him anymore of course...). It's an important park for the people of Amsterdam. There are playgrounds and several horeca facilities. Horeca is a composite from Hotel - Restaurant - Café. It's an abbreviation used for the food service industry.

The movie theater of the Netherlands Filmmuseum, the national film museum, is also located here, in a 19th century pavilion. The films that are screened here range from 19th century silent films to contemporary digital productions. The museum also organizes exhibitions, lectures, debates, and in the summer there are open air films on the terrace. Every two years newly restored films from the collection are screened during the Filmmuseum Biennial.

There is also an open air theatre at the park. The Vondelpark Openluchttheater is an open air theatre with shows from June until August. There are performances of classical music, pop music, world music, dance, musical theatre, and cabaret. The theatre receives a subsidy from the city government. And although all performances have free entrance, visitors are asked for a donation of one euro. Ah, this is the most wonderful place to be on warm Summer nights...

If I were to make a comparison I would have to say that to Amsterdam and its people the Vondelpark is what Central Park is to New York and the New Yorkers.

#1 This is the main entrance to the Park.

#2 Just a corner of the park. A stitch of several shots. Most everything still brown and trees so bare...

Saw the last picture first and immediately knew it was The Netherlands. I must be getting familiar with the look of the country from Levina's photos. Or maybe it's all the bikes :D

All the bikes, and not a helmet in sight!
Perhaps we are over regulated in the US, especially in California ;)

Great photo, again, Levina! I just love the bikes and the bike culture of Amsterdam!

I'd say that we're a culture of over protection based on little more than well-communicated fear. The statistics certainly don't support many of the extremes we go to for "protection". The helmet debate is extremely contentious in the bike industry. In Europe, helmets are for sporting uses only (racing, mountain biking, etc), but if you run an ad in the US of someone cruising around a farmer's market without a helmet, you get spiteful emails from pro-helmet crusaders and interest groups demanding helmet use.

Sorry for the soapbox, but this is a rather heated topic that I have to deal with on a regular basis.
