Renting a lens for camping - but weather is so-so

Going for a weekend campout and planning to rent the Canon 10-22 EF-S from a local shop. I only have the 28mm and 50mm EF lenses for my 60D, so I was thinking having a nice wide angle lens for lake and mountain pictures would be nice. However, the weather seems like it will be partly cloudy the first day and then cloudy (and even light rain) the whole next day+. Think it's still worth it to rent the lens?

Absolutely.

When weather is changing, storms are coming in and out, you have a chance to see a really phenomenal sunrise or sunset if you get any light to break through the clouds.

You might not get a single decent shot, you might not even be able to pull the lens out of your bag if the weather takes a turn for the worse.. but that's the thing with photography, you never know what you're going to get.

Bruce Percy (this guy) says in one of his books that basically, bad weather is the best weather. It's changing, it's dramatic, it's moody, it's emotional - whereas a clear blue sky is maybe exciting once, but that's about it. "There is no bad weather," I believe were his words.

Bear in mind though, he does landscapes only and pretty much all his shots are either at or near sunrise or sunset, which may or may not be what you had in mind for your trip.

As long as there is some texture in the sky, bad weather is great. If its just flat grey, then it sucks (but then its very soft light, so good for certain subjects).

Consider bringing ND and polarizing filters too. Are those rentable items?

Weather brewing photos - amazing stuff. Way better than clear, boring, skies.

Good chance to take some shots of JUST the sky so you can photoshop them into blue-sky backgrounds, LOL.

Worth it? Hell yea! Some of my best landscapes were made when I gambled on the incoming, outgoing crappy weather. Of course I've also driven 3+ hours, hiked in a couple of miles, and been totally shut out by the weather. It's all part of the fun if you ask me
