Tripods are fine. TSA is only concerned with the really dangerous items, like large tubes of tooth paste and soda bottles.

Flew to Thailand last December. Seattle to Taiwan, no problem. When I got to Taiwan they stopped me at security and I had to check it. I thought that would be the last time I saw it but when I got to baggage claim in Bangkok I found the airline staff had put it in a box and taped it nicely. Checked it for the return flight to avoid the hassle.

I carried my benro in my carry-on from san jose to vegas and back without issue. During the scan they asked to look at the markins ballhead but all the TSA guys seem to know they are photography equipment.
