I think the point, at least mine was, that you could have frozen it with less than 1/8000 and thus lowered the ISO a bit. The 5D3 is great at high ISO but there's nothing like low ISO if you can get it

=Ingerson"PCD";15887811]Thanks, yes you answered it. I'm by no means a bird expert, but I was under the impression you could stop that motion with considerably lower shutter speeds. That's why I asked.

Yasick wrote in post #15888998 (external link)
Oh ok thanks, im also not an expert on bird shooting. Ive done a few peacock shoots but they are slow. Anyways thanks for sharing that info.

My experience has been that you can freeze the body of a flying bird easily at 1/2000s. You can even get the wings of the bird frozen if it is gliding or landing. If the bird is flapping hard, below 1/6000s you get what I call a typical humming bird like picture, where the body is frozen but you can see the motion in the wings. Rest of it is luck and chance :)

In this case I was trying to freeze every individual feather while the bird was flapping after a took off from a 25 feet high branch. I happened to be at the same height.

Here is a landing shot at 1/2000s.

A fellow flickr user has posted a lot of pictures of birds at various shutter speeds. Check out the ones linked below:

Have these been "HDR'd"?
Whatever you've done it's effective, especially the 2nd one.

Me too. I know it is not really an HDR, but some really awsome processing. The second one looks like a piece of art. It would be great if you could share which tool you used and what really you did to get this effect.

Like this?

That is 1/500s (400mm/ISO 640). I quite like to see a little movement to show that the thing is alive... ;)

Just installed the new 5D3 firmware upgrade. Tried out the f/8 AF using my 400mm f/5.6 lens plus 1.4xTCIII giving 560mm @ f/8. Impressed with the IQ but I notice AF speed is slower on my 5D3 with this combination than when used on my 1DmkIV. One of my first test shots:
