Don't count on that. In fact it may go up when people get a sticker shock at the new version and start snatching up the old ones.

This. I made money when I sold my two used 24-70 mkI lenses once the new version price was announced.

It makes no sense for canon to redo the 100-400 now
With the 200-400 up and comming (long over due)
And the very good 70-300 L
I am not sure this would be a priority for canon

the 200-400mm isn't really comparable to a 100-400mm...even if the II comes out and is priced at $3,000 it will still be considerably cheaper than the 200-400mm...

The current 100-400 is more than a decade old, good as it is, it can use a refresh (better AF, better IS, probably better performance at wide open).

Neither of the two lenses you mentioned is a replacement for it.

Speculation has started again
We’ve received a few reports that an announcement for a replacement to the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS is “very possible for the end of August”. A few prototypes of the lens are currently in use in Asia.
This has been a lens that has been set for replacement as far back as I can remember. I think it’s more probable for release now that Nikon has put their new 80-400 out, which was an area of weakness for them.
We’ve heard from a few people that Canon is having manufacturing issues and that there’s a backlog of new lenses slated for production.

A new 100-400 is always a non-stop rumor, so I'm going to believe it when Canon announces it. I finally stopped waiting and got my 100-400 last year. A refresh with sharper image at f/5.6 @ 400mm, a great new IS, and a non-pump-action zoom mechanism would be fantastic.

I assume that's a joke and not really an eye roll. I think he meant 70-400.

The problem the 100-400 has, is that many of us have moved on from the 24-105 and 100-400 stable. The current 24-105 is pretty old and is probably the worse performing std zoom at 24mm of all of Canon's current std zooms. The 100-400 is a good lens if you can get a stellar copy. But it's ancient and old and really needs an update.
Most of the recent standard zooms have all been 24-70mm lenses. which leaves a pretty big gap between 70-100mm when pairing with a 100-400. I just wished Canon has opted for a 70-400 lens design. Or maybe there's a new 24-105 coming soon?

If the rumors turn out to be true, It'll probably won't be available for us normal folk until 2014. I'll be ready to pull the trigger by then.

Maybe arrive in time for income tax refunds

Aside from improved optics and zoom mechanism, I would love to see a 4-stop IS for a new 100-400. That's no doubt an expensive improvement, but I'm OK with that.

If a new 100-400 is released, I can already imagine the shocked vitriolic outcry about the cost, as if the whiners have paid no attention whatsoever to the escalation of lens prices in general. I imagine the cost will be somewhere between 1000-4000. Seriously though, I am so ready for a new improved 100-400! Those who are going to hate the price of the new one can just keep the old one, because it's really very good! :)
