all in perspective! I'd say a lot of working pros have more in gear than their cars are worth. Joe McNally probably has more in batteries and chargers than my car is worth! :). And maybe more in Speedlights than my house is worth. :) :).

My first car cost $110, though it had been in a wreck. My dad and I got it running again. (OK, it was mostly him)

Our first house was $12,600..... as you can tell, I'm getting up there.

It must be gear acquisition day: I just ordered a set of RRS tripod legs.

crap crap crap... I got trigger happy. Saw the deal for a new 6D for $1546 and bought it :/

Now I need to sell my 7D. I hope this was a right decision.......

I just bought one today. Though I shopped locally and didn't get quite as good a deal as you did. But then I don't have to wait for shipping.... I'm just staring at the battery charger light. Waiting.

Whether or not it's the right decision depends on why you bought it. If it will give you something you feel you need that your 7D didn't then it's worth it. If not, then return it.

Sean, that impulse Buy was more than I spent on my first 4 cars combined!

Actually my little spending spree this morning took a lot of self-control. Lol. I had a grip, extra battery, bag, tripod, etc. in the cart but I told myself to slow down. It's been a year since I did any photographing.

Jake, is that a statement about gear, or about your age? I've been on the dark side of 50 for sometime. I know photogs who have more invested in equipment than I put in my first house.

I would be similar to those photographers you know. Lol. My FS threads here would show SOME of the gear I've amassed and sold. I went from a few Canon DSLRs to Nikon and now officially back to Canon. When I sold my Nikon and my entire studio, I thought I was done with photography... until this morning.

To the OP, keep only what you need. You don't want something to just gather dust whilst depreciating.

Hope it wasn't the ebay deal with Getitdigital. If so they are not an authorize Canon dealer and just a quick google "getitdigital scam" and you could see the plentiful complaints as well as a "F" BBB rating. Just becareful.

That's exactly what I was referring to in my post above (previous page), which is why I opted to buy from PMI Digital.

Both. :)

I've been on the dark side of 50 for sometime. I know photogs who have more invested in equipment than I put in my first house.

Just FYI, it was NOT an indictment however...

...well maybe a bit, but one of mutual understanding!
I have "Impulse bought" a single lens that also cost more than my first 4 cars combine!

And, I'd consider doing it again with the SAME lens, (having regrettably sold the first one) IF I could afford to.

Now house, .. that's a whole 'nother level :)

...

Let's see...

1976: Bought 6cyl '67 Camaro for $300 (had suffered fire damage... had to remake the harness out of household wiring...)

1978: Sold the wreck, bought a 73 LeMans (official Consumer Reports Lemon of the Year) for $1300

1980: Stuck valve on the lemon, sold for parts, bought a 67 VW Squareback for $600

Got married... next car was a new 1982 Honda Civic so I'll settle for the first 3...

$300+$1300+$600= $2200

2012: Bought the Great White Father EF 70-200 MkII for nearly $2800 all said and done

Yeah.. I'll buy that!

Yup. I know, I'm gambling. I don't really mind that much that it's not authorized dealer. Hell every camera I've purchased has been used with no warranty at all. and I own sigma lenses so I like to live on the edge

If you make money off your gear I would keep the 7D. You need to have a backup when Murphy comes around.

But if you need the money to help cover the cost SELL IT NOW, the price is gonna drop so much when the 7DM2 comes out soon.

I doubt the prices will drop much, the replacement will be 2k if anything they will hold steady at 800ish

and ya I do plan on selling but not till I get the 6D and about a month after.

I bought my first car in 2005; a 1993 Chevy S10; 90k miles on it. Loved that truck; 1300 from a friend of the family. Lots of TLC, and that truck lasted me 40k until I graduated and had a steady income. And I recently bought a 50L for the same price after a few beers.

The car/camera cost comparisons between the past and the present brought a big smile to my face! My first car, a 1300cc VW Beetle, cost me $300 in 1973 (one month's wages), my latest camera body (5D MkIII) set me back around $3,500, which is less than a month's wages now... It's all relative :p
