i wanted to print 12x18 prints at 300 ppi, now my cameras 18 megapixels just come under that, but i have already edited them in post and exported into tif's. Will there be any detriment to my photos upsampling that small amount after all editing has been done?
A small amount of upsampling is just fine. I also have an 18mpx camera (t2i/550D) and I have made 24x36 posters for the hallways here at my job. It wasn't easy, but if you're going to jump up more than 10% or so, I highly recommend you use a "staircase" approach:
1) In the Image Size dialogue, change the top parameters to "percent" rather than pixels, inches etc.
2) Upsample by 5%. Repeat. Repeat--until you get to your desired final size.
3) Carefully sharpen
Doing this allows the resampling algorythym to work multiple times on lighter work loads.
