Thank you very much, Joayne, Neil, Yohan and Peter for the kind words. I have enjoyed myself so much with Nifty. I'm a bird photographer and basically only know long glass. But thanks to Nifty I now have a better understanding of what a focal length of 50mm means. And I have seen my home town with fresh eyes and learned a thing or two in the process about that too. Six weeks of Nifty has been a truly wonderful experience.

Very well done. :D

One thing that I missed that hopefully the next Dutch host could cover (apologies Levina if you already did this and I missed it): Indonesian culture in The Netherlands. As far as it exists, anyway. I assume it does since as an Indonesian expat I've heard that Indonesian food is prevalent there. There's definitely food culture cross-contamination as I have a box of De Ruijter Hagelslag at the house right now :) Indonesians call them a word that is roughly pronounced "meshiess", which I believe is incorrectly adapted from the Dutch word for the colorful variant instead of the pure chocolate variety. Anyway, maybe next time :)

Ah, you are referring to a group of people that we refer to as Indo's (not to be confused with Indonesians!). In the past they were also sometimes called 'Blauwe' (Blue), not a nice word. The term mesties is not used here. I looked it up and the word comes from the Portuguese "mestico," which means "of pure race" which was used relatively to distinguish between the 'more white' Indo's and the natives, as you already said.

As to an Indonesian culture in the Netherlands. The Indo's are so well integrated that as a group they are pretty much invisible. The only thing that makes them visible as a group is their cuisine. Indonesian food is not prevalent here, but Indonesian restaurants are popular with the Dutch. You can serve me an Indonesian rijsttafel anytime! :)

Amsterdam is a city with a rich history and in 6 weeks I could only cover so much. I had to make choices. One place I now wish I would have gone to is the Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics). The museum is "one of Europe’s leading ethnographic museums, renowned for its collection. The permanent and temporary exhibitions display (art) objects, photographs, music and film from non-western cultures." (quote from their website)
They have a permanent exhibition on 350 years of Dutch Colonial history in the Netherlands East Indies. Another story with some dark pages...
Hopefully a future Dutch host will cover it.

Enjoy that De Ruijter hagelslag! Love it myself. :D

I'll see what I can come up with. I'm not really into let's say 'exotic foods', but I'm sure I'll find some Indonesian influence somewhere.
I think Levina already posted a picture of a replica of an old VOC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company (external link)) ship, which is directly related to Indonesia ;)

Probably you mean 'muisjes', which translates to 'mice' or 'small mice'.

That is too funny. I thought that whole paragraph was about the Indo's!! And that "meshiess" referred to "mesties" when Yohan was still talking about Hagelslag!!! Man, Nifty must have gone to my head in the end...
He *was* talking about "muisjes"!!!
I feel like a complete moron now.

Thanks for clearing that up, Pieter!

Thanks for the pointer. I'll look back in Levina's photos for the ship. Don't feel obligated or anything if Indonesian influence isn't a big part of Dutch life. I was just hoping to see some if it was indeed a big deal.

Yeah, I didn't want to say anything but since Pieter let the cat of the bag... I did appreciate the explanation about the term "Indo" and all the cultural connections thereof. That's part of what's interesting about traveling and Nifty should get to experience that :)

I got a new nifty! I tried to contact ChrisBlaze with no response and KenjiS can't host nifty right now, so I bumped them down the list. Nifty will be on its way to Philk54 this weekend when I get home.

At present we would like anyone wishing to host have at least a 200 post count or have been active on POTN for a year. Hopefully this will reduce the number of people that do not participate in a timely manner, or "forget" to move Nifty on to the next host, or simply don't care.

That's good news. Would be even better to see some pics from the new Nifty. No chance of snapping a few before sending it off?

And I wonder what happened to some of the other Nifty's, like the DUPAN Nifty. Have there been any images at all from host charlieharper?

MrWes, nice shots from Disneyland. Post more!!

Still without a camera unfortunately. Hopefully I'll be able to replace that over the summer sometime.

Ah right. Sorry, GuitarFreak, I thought that was replaced already too.
No matter. Just glad that you got it all sorted out and that you'll be able to replace your stolen gear in time.
