has anyone owned a d300? I'm thinking and wondering if it's worth to getting one for $500 to try out Nikon. I've been using a d60 and love the files but the body is very limited.

was very close to getting it today off someone but it's too late to meet at this time.

D300 is a good sturdy camera, with the major advantage of what was then (D3, D700) Nikon's top end AF system. Image quality is generally good, low light performance is about 1 stop worse than D700. I think the body will be around the same size as your 50D, maybe just a bit bigger?

If camera size and top end AF are not so important, the Nikon D90 pretty much matches D300 for image quality and low-light performance, and adds one of Nikon's first attempts at DSLR video function - back in 2008/2009 we were using 2x D700, 1x D300, and 1x D90, but found ourselves only needing 3 camera bodies, and we sold the D300 but kept the D90.

Just before we switched to Nikon, we were using 2x 5D, 1x 1Dsmk1, 1x 40D.

The IQ will be similar but you will get more out of a D300 body. FPS, buffer, shutter speed, etc. If that's important go for it. I would personally save the money and get the D7100 when feasible.

This is a great shot. Wonderful vibrance and saturation without being overdone to the point of making it look like a painting instead of a photograph. This image also shows the excellent optical quality of the 80-200 and why I won't get rid of mine. The older 300 ED-If f/4 is very similar in optical quality.

I've been scarce here lately due to a new venture and the response I wasn't expecting. Some days I'm spending 16 hours at it so obviously no time to play with the photo gear except when it's for the venture and even then just the D90 on the copystand with various macro lenses.

A buddy of mine from NYC send me his kit including a D90, 50/1,4G, and 70-200 VR II so I need to try to squeeze in some time to play with the 70-200 before posting it on FM.

Yeah the 80-200 is a keeper, build is just awesome on it. What im more suprized is how well the 300 f4 with 1.7 TC works. really like this combo for the reach.

I did think about a 7000/7100 but didn't want to spend that much. I would rather spend it on ff. This is just a test camera for me to play with before I get the body I want :)

WIll most likely use it as a main for events. I really like the size of the body. good for my big hands :D

thanks for your input Dan.

that's good to hear :D

which body did you have before you hopped on over?

i'm currently using a 50d, I would like to know if it will be an equivalent. I know 50d has more mp, but the d300 will only serve me until I fully get into the shifting. after that it will be put aside and used to lend out to my brother instead of giving him the more expensive toys when asking to borrow a dslr

Started with the Digital Rebel then went 20D, 30D, 40D and 50D. I did not like the image quality with the 50D.
I've never been happier than with Nikon. I currently have the D300 and the D600.
