Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM

Can I please get some owners opinions please!

I've owned this lens for a while and coupled it with my 450D and it worked fine and I was pretty happy with it. I upgraded to a 5DII fairly recently and have used the lens a little with it once and never noticed any issues.

I went to the zoo yesterday and today and got the lens out for the first time in a couple of months and noticed it wasn't working very well.
The auto-focus was acting crazy. Sometimes it would lock on focus, but it seemed most of the time it was just hunting really badly. I missed so many photo opportunities!
It would hunt for ages even while I moved the lens around trying to lock onto something- anything! To make it stop hunting I would have to change to manual focus, take some pictures with that, put it back on Auto and MAYBE it would work for a little while after that... If I was lucky. Turning it on and off didn't help either.

I made sure the subject was within the focus distance, it was happening in pretty good light as well as dim light, subjects were contrasty enough that it should be able to lock on. Tried on all different AF modes and still didn't help.

Basically I was getting super frustrated with it and was about ready to throw it against walls. It was pretty embarrassing standing next to other photographers with my lens hunting away, not locking on to anything. I'm sure they noticed because it was loud enough...

So, does anyone have this coupled with a 5DII and is this behaviour normal? I'm pretty confident it's not, given I've owned the lens for so long and not had a problem like this.
Has it just..Broken, for no reason? I'm confused if it has because sometimes it will work fine but it's now completely unreliable

Placidbabe mine was doing the same thing on a 50d and had to send it off for repair .It was the focus motor. I had bought it in the States so only 1 year warranty in Canada I think the cost was around $120. The good thing is it only took 10 days to have it back .

I'm glad to hear it isn't too expensive... Hopefully it's around the same price here in Australia.

That why I made sure to get the 7yr Mack International Warranty. Brought the lens from Hong Kong through Camera Paradise.

Some test shots at a Sigma event last week-end (had the opportunity to try out the 35mm Art and the 70-200mm f/2.8 OS on my 7D).

I don't suppose you still have the 450D or another camera to mount it on, do you? The first thing you need to do is isolate the problem to either the lens or the camera body. To do that you need to see if it is doing this on all bodies or just your 5DII.

I really like this lens, its sharp enough for 200 mm and has a pleasant bokeh ))

Ok, I tested mine @home (as it's raining a lot these days and I'm coming back a bit late from work).

SOOC (I only changed the the WB and converted it in JPEG).
EXIF: EOS 7D - Sigma 70-200mm@104mm - 1/60s - f/2.8 - ISO 1000

If you shoot in inclement weather a lot and it isn't inconvenient to use a tripod, then the Canon 70-200 f2.8 non IS may be ideal. I am in a similar position, but I am not worried about rain as much as I am worried about dust. Where this lens will be going is going to be very dusty.. So that is my main concern, I may have to shell out for the 70-200 f4L IS to get the weather sealing that I know I am going to need
