Hi.

I just upgraded from my 400D to the 7D.
I chose the 7D over the 6D and 60D since the specs seems to be very sport/action oriented.

Now you can see in my signature my kit, I need more reach.

So I have done some research, and I just can not decided.

The top contenders are:

Canon 70-300L
Tokina 80-400
Sigma 150-500

Now since I am no pro, I don't know all others on the market, if you do please share it would be might appreciated.

Like I said I am not a professional but I do believe buy quality is a must since I will be keeping the lense for a very long time, I kept my last kit for 7 years, and just kepted the 15mn because I love it so much.

Hope you guys will be able to rescue me :)
Ps: sorry for any typos I am on a Mobil

Not sure where your price point is. But for your consideration:

300mm f/4L IS + 1.4x III extender
100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS

If it helps, these are actual examples of what happens when a Sigma 150-500mm optical stabilizer lens is used to gather motorsports images (counting the Thunderbird airshow image as a motorsport...).

The Sigma lens is the least expensive stabilized 500mm unit available for EF-mount cameras. Unfortunately, supertelephoto lenses are very expensive. The very good Canon 500mm f/4 stabilized lens (external link) is priced at US $11,000 or €8,000

The 70-300L would do a great job on all those things. It's an outstanding lens.

depends on the distance but the Canon 100-400 is probably the best in the 400mm zooms

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM (or the new OS version if you can swing it), paired with Sigma's 1.4X and 2.0X teleconverters.

I used my Sigma (EX DG HSM, non-OS version) for two seasons to shoot Superbike racing and hockey, and it performed wonderfully.

It took the Sigma TCs *very* well, with no discernible difference in speed in AF speed or image quality with the 1.4x, and to me what seemed like a tiny hit in image quality with the 2.0x.

For just a bit more money than the Canon 100-400mm f/5.6 lens, you can get the Sigma plus TCs, to give you 300mm at f/2.8, 420mm at f/4- or 600mm at f/5.6. When shooting surfing and racing, every extra stop of light helps with higher shutter speeds to capture the action.

which one?

I have the 150-500OS

it is pretty good when stopped down to f8...which means you'll have to have quite a bit of light

a lot of people complain about the weight of the lens...

probably not the fastest AF lens out there, but I find it does well with tracking in AI servo

I don't know much about the 120-300f2.8 OS...but I do like the idea of it...and for me sometime down the line seems like a good step

complaints for the sigma? I only have a few nit-picks.

its simply not as sharp as the canon L lenses. The colors are not always as 'right on' as the canon L lenses. the ONLY exception to that is if you have great conditions for light, and even then, you can still tell.

I've got the 50-500 OS and a 300 IS 2.8 L... I've shot the same scenes with 7Ds that are setup the same with each lens, and the 300 with a 2TC produces a better quality image that the sigma can. if it's dark, I yank the TC off, shoot wide open, and crop heavily, and still manage to get acceptable images.

is it $2500 better? maybe. it depends on what you plan to do with the image. If your going to make a big huge sports poster out of the image, yes, it's worth it. If your shooting for your online viewing collection, I don't think you will need the better image resolution the canon brings, unless you find yourself cropping a lot.

Just to be clear, I'm still VERY pleased with my 50-500OS, and still use it when I'm not having to crop much to fill the frame. or if it's dark enough that F8-F10 is too dark at ISO 1600 on the sigma :) The sigma is also a great travel lens, when you don't want to be bothered with carrying extras, or swaping lenses out. but it is a compromise on many levels to get that range, and the first time you rent a good prime superzoom, your going to think someone has smeard something on your screen when you look at your sigma images up close :(

+1 for the 50-500 OS
The 120-300 f2.8 is yummy but a serious heavy weight

If you will be shooting from the sand then reach is what you will need. I've used the 100-400mm which worked really well and eventually sold it for the 400mm 5.6. The 400mm 5.6 is a screaming lens, fast AF, light, and depending on the body (1D) will take a 1.4X telecon. I've also used it at air shows and works really well but if I had to do it over again would have kept the 100-400mm as the IQ difference is marginal.
