I used gphoto2 to find out how many clicks. But I am a computer programmer, and love working with Linux.

It did not come with the latest firmware. I will be updating that tonight.

I read a thread here somewhere that the site EOSCount.com no longer works on 5D3s that have been updated to the latest FW. I would be very interested in your experience with gPhoto2 after you update your FW. Could you please post back with your results?

I just updated the Firmware, and used gphoto2 again to get the shutter count. It now reads 85. (Which is about what I expect from my short testing so far).

It really is easy to do. Just download the latest Fedora live disk, and boot from CD. It will run from just about any laptop or desktop, and once you shut down, you can re-boot as normal without the CD, and everything will be as it was before. There is no danger to your current OS.

yes. you may have to send it in for verification if it does not have a serial number but they'll take even film SLRs.

I agree that gphoto2 is very simple to run. About the only drawback that I could find was the fact that it requires a wired Ethernet connection to work. I couldn't figure out how to use it on a wireless network.

You can run it on a wireless network. You just need to configure linux wireless networking which is probably outside the scope of that small tutorial.

There is also a "lifetime" option for $4.95 which allows unlimited readings.

I am not aware of the 5D3 commanding a smaller discount than the other bodies. I think everything in the CLP is 20% of the regular refurb price.

Perhaps you are confusing the 20% CLP discount with the regular "sales" that Canon runs where the prices are often 15% off the regular refurb price. Note that this "sale" discount and the CLP discount don't stack, so it is either-or.

For example, during Thanksgiving, they were having a higher % discount as part of their Thanksgiving sale than the CLP 20% discount, so it didn't make sense to do the CLP discount. But right now, the regular sale (that just got over today) is only 15%, so CLP still will get you ahead.

5DMIII only gets 15% discount in the CLP.

Lower models still get a 20% discount.
