Just picked this lens up a couple weeks ago and I am loving it.

Dumb question. Which is better picture wise 400 or 100-400 at 400?

Ditto. Some will say the zoom is (almost) as sharp as the prime, but one thing is certain : it will never be sharper.

OK Thanks. I am thinking about the 100-400 but then thought about this one. I like to shoot birds and would like to get the best bang for the buck. Both are pretty close in price so i guess it is just a matter which will be better all around.

If you shoot birds, you can't go wrong with the prime. With the zoom you'd always be at 400mm anyway. And IMO the prime has the edge as far as sharpness goes.

I had the Canon 100-400mm, and switch to the the 400mm f5.6 due to the lack of sharpness with the 100-400mm copy I received. I would suggest test out the one you plan to buy.

Some folks have asked about my stacking the Kenko 1.4x TC and 2.0x TC on the 400 5.6. We finally got some sunshine, so I have some pics shot today from outside my office in good light. These were shot handheld. The first is the shot using a 50mm lens, just to give you an idea of the scene as it looks to the naked eye. The next is the shot with the 400 5.6 and stacked TCs, just reduced in size to fit here. The third is a non-reduced 800x600 100% crop from near the center of the image.
