Saturday started with a downpour that made me wait 30 minutes in the car before entering the airshow. Of course I was not patient enough to wait for the aircraft that eventually flew so I came back Sunday. It was so much more promising weather and was looking nice right up to the time for the show to start. Then a nice thunderstorm just decided to develop right over the field. I quickly made my way back to the car---Again, and managed to get exactly ONE nice picture to remember the weekend with. I though I would ask the other Forum members to share!:)

I don't remember ever seeing that one before. Reminds me of the saying, "That's a face that only a mother would love"? ; )

It's a C-46 Commando. The predecessor to the C-47 (obviously).

They were contemporaries and competitors. Completely unrelated and from different manufacturers. C-46 was by Curtis and the C-47 was Douglas. Both were entered into service in 1941.

The "Tinker Belle" is owned and operated by the City of Monroe, NC. I think they acquired her about two years ago.:p

You can't see it in these pics, but she has 11 camels painted on her nose with her name - 1for each flight over "The Hump" during WWII. A genuine veteran.

I was only able to make it on Saturday and spent the day there. Fortunately, I packed a rain poncho so, got out of the car ok and waited out the worst of it in the hanger with the Mossie.

I heard on Sunday, three members of the Airborne Demo Team ended up in the trees after departing Tinker Belle. The fire dept. was sent to get them down. Then, with the rain the fire truck got stuck in the mud. What a mess.

Here's Tinker Belle in Saturday's rain snapped from the Fighter Factory hanger.

Radial engines don't actually leak oil, by the way. They just mark their territory!
