So I think I might bring my 5DM3 and X100S to China (this can change)..

Now another hard decision...

I have both the 24-70 v2 and 24-105..(I use to own the 24-70 v1) All my vacations I have taken, I always grabbed the 24-105.. because of the lightweight, reach, has IS, etc. But having used the 24-70.. I really love the sharpness, even in the corners... Not saying the 24-105 is not sharp.. but the 24-70 is well... damn sharp....

So I need to figure out what lens I am going to pair with the 5DMarkIII for my China Trip...

Looking at your gear list, I'd say you'd be the best person to ask. If you just got those lens's I'd understand you wanting/needing advice. Can you look over past vacation trips and and say....wish I had the xxxxx lens instead. For family vacation, I tend to go the p/s camera's. Most of those pics end up on the social media and not for print....but China would be another story. Sorry I wasn't much help, just got the 24-70 v2 myself. Now I know why it's called the 'brick'. Good luck and enjoy your trip. First time? What other travels do you have under your belt?

24-70 v2 plus tripod would be my choice. Don't really care for the extra reach of the 105, but stabilization is damn handy for nigh scenery.

Pretty easy decision, if 2.8 is not needed, the 24-105 will give you more reah and IS, Conversley, if 2.8 is needed, the trade off is reach and no IS. Both will give Excellent IQ, with the nudge to the 2.8.

Plesant and enjoyable travels

If you are binging the 5D3 you might as well pair it with the best 24-xx lens out there. My vote goes to the 24-70. Only just because I love it! Pair it with your 50L and you are set for some serious photography.

I'll be travelling myself few months from now and you know what? It's always easier giving other people opinions and when it comes to myself I'd be just like you too :)

Enjoy the trip!

I recently sold the 24-105 and added a 24-70II. Sure, the 24-70 weighs more on paper but I didn't really notice a difference while out walking around with it. Id list the 24-105 for sale so you don't even have to worry about this type of choice again. :)

This is exactly the reason I sold my 24-105 just prior to buying my 24-70II. I didn't want to have to make a decision like this because I knew it would be a tough one. I still miss that 24-105 for the reach tho...

I would take the 24-105. I love having the IS available. The range is great for travel. If i dont have to take a tripod then I would prefer to leave it at home. Where in china are you traveling to?

easy choice for me -- 24-70L II. that zoom coupled with the 5d3 is pure magic :D.

in fact if you own the the 24-70L II and a modern FF camera I see no reason to own the 24-105L.

so did I .... at first. shortly after I bought the 24-70L II I sold my 1ds mark III and bought the 5d3. the lens went from being very good to stunning.

in low light with the 5d3 you can set the iso to auto and a lowest setting of 1/60s and get an amazing number of keepers.

I would prefer IS obviously but really it's not as necessary as it once was when I was shooting with bodies that were so-so to crappy at higher ISOs.

I also have the 35 f2 IS that combined with the 5d3 allows me to shoot in the dark....but that's a different story ;).

Ed- I just got the lens so i dont have a verdict yet. Im going to take it out this weekend. From the first few shots it looks very promising. Maybe im weird but I miss the enormous hood.
