Do you guys use extension tubes with this lens? I can't seem to get as close as you guys do on your subjects.

The little guys are 10mm in height and I was around 30cm away from them. The issue with getting close is that you have razor thin DoF so in the case where you need deep DoF such as the little guys, you'll need to focus stack to get the result you require. It's an awesome lens, but you need to experiment to understand how it works ;-)a

Once you start adding tubes, the DoF range gets even thinner so you may have a tiny fragment of your shot in focus and the rest out of range. I think most people shoot in RAW and then crop rather than using tubes. That said, tubes are great, I have a set of Kenko, but it really depends upon the effect you wish to create.

Good luck ;-)a

For maximum magnification:

  1. set focus to manual
  2. dial focus down to 1:1/.99/.30
  3. move the whole camera to achieve focus
  4. take the shot

If thats still not as big, something else in in play (cropping, tubes...)

Thanks for the replies. The focus stacking makes sense. It's just that I tried to shoot a spider and it wouldn't let me focus any closer to this:

And if I crop it. The details aren't as pronounced as the spider shots that I see here.

(I sprayed the guy with water so he won't go anywhere)
