There's two schools of thought, I went through nearly the same thing with my old 1D2.

Got the 5D3, can't imagine I will ever pick up the 1D2 again.

That said, I paid $4,500.00 for that 1D2 way back when,. and now to sell it for just $350.00-400.00 or so? It's here as back up, and could be a great gift for someone looking for a real workhorse.
Vs. $350.00?

So I kept it.. so far anyway.

If you don;t have any other option for a back up.. I'd hold onto the 40D for a while anyway. It sucks when you have no camera.

if youve lived 4 years without a backup camera i assume that you dont need one. I would sell it for sure. The way people talk on this forum you would assume everyone makes a living with their camera and need 10 pluss bodies.

Good point.
If for some reason the new 5D has to go to warranty I dont have any other camera.

exactly. There is no reason to keep it; you could get a nice lens like an 85/1.8, 50/1.4, or most of a 100 macro

I also have a 40D, and I am also going to get a 5DIII. Since the 40D is my only camera I have always taken care of it. When I get my 5DIII, I will put the 28-135 on it that came with the 40D, and the 40 will always stay in my car with me. -rick

I bought a 40D as a back up/sports camera when I upgraded my t2i to my 5d2. Then I realized I don't shoot sports/action at all and I never need to bring a second body anywhere so I ended up selling it recently. I just don't like having stuff sitting around if I never use it.
