But you should compare top or the line with top of the line and you're right there is no comparison to Leica. The person looking for FPS and auto everything is not a Leica customer.

David Hobby is on record saying that the X100s is more Leica than any digital camera Leica has actually released. Fuji is onto something special.

Well, I've shot with both and I prefer Leica. My buddy that has one prefers his M9. And I especially prefer the MM over both the M9 and the Fuji. I prefer FF which is on of many reason I prefer Leica.

His Fuji,

Leica is not an option for a lot of people, either because they can't or won't, pay that much. I'm not paying $7K for one, I'm just not. Not when I can get 90% of the experience for 20% of the price. That last 10% will just have to remain a mystery to me. As for FF, Fuji will come out with one of those as well, then things will get VERY interesting. Also, that's not a x100s...

David Hobby doesn't shoot with a Leica.

I do. Moreover, I shoot with an X100. I can tell you that as good as the X100 is (and the X100s is better, still), it's no Leica. For somethings, it's better. For many things, it's worse.

I also use an X-Pro1. It's a terrific camera, but it's also not a Leica. It operates completely differently than my M6 (ignoring the obvious film vs digital).

Thats fine for you. But they are not in the same league, period. And good for you but again FF the only option for me. And sometimes its that 20% that can make all the difference. ;)

Be informed before you just start throwing statements around. He has most certainly used a Leica, extensively. I'm also talking about the X100s, you admit you don't have or use one. The x100 is inferior in every way to the x100s. I'm interested in the many ways it's worse though, other than not having the red dot and leaving me with a lot more money in my wallet ;)

It was 10 percent...

When professional photographers whose opinions I trust are saying they use the x100s in a professional setting, that's good enough for me. And the contention wasn't that they're in the same league. Leica should be better for what they charge. What's interesting is how close Fuji gets at a fraction of the cost. And FF is the only option?

There's a romanticism around Leica and they're well aware and traffic in it. The problem is they're not doing anything better than anyone else anymore. All they have left is the red dot... to lure you in.

I'm a full time pro. Have been for several decades. Advertising/commercial work. I prefer the Leica by a lot. My buddy that has the XPro1 also prefers Leica. He's a full time pro to. So theres two full time pros that prefer Leica.

Ok so 10%. Still a lot can happen in that 10%.

Guys, guys! Please lets not turn this thread into a Leica vs. Fuji war.
We know they are different and one has strong/weak points over the other.
I guess I am keeping the 5D3 for full frame, but after seeing what improved on the X100S, I am probably waiting to see what is coming out in the new firmware for the XP1. That split screen thing would solve 99% of my problems!

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

I'm not familiar with your work. I don't know your buddy or his work either... you don't have a website or flickr or 500px, so it's tough to judge

A time is fast approaching, some say it's already here, where Leica doesn't do anything better than anyone else. As for commercial work, wouldn't you prefer a Phase?

Value isn't there IMO. Leica isn't 6x better. Just like whether I'd rather have one 1dx or two 5DMK3's, I'll take the 5D twice please.

Like I said I shot with my buds Fuji and his M9 before pulling the trigger. I have 2 5DIIs and I've shot a bit with the 5DIII and the 1DsMkIII. I am in the processing of switching completely over to Leica in the next few years. Thats how impressed I've been. The value is there for me. My work pays for everything but I am still very cautious with my money. If I wasn't careful I wouldn't have had any longevity in this business. I think that value comes with equipment that fits the photographer and the way he/she works. Leica M just gets out of the way for me.

A great quote by Bresson and I come to believe its the same with equipment. I think I said this earlier, over the years I have bought things to settle or because I thought it made more sense economically but I always wound up spending more in the long run and usually wound up where I thought that I should have went in the first place. I don't need all the gear just the stuff that works for my vision and you've be surprised how much money you have if you don't chase it all. Heres the Bresson quote.
"The difference between a good picture and a mediocre picture is a question of millimetres – small, small difference." -Henri Cartier-Bresson

I never said the XPro1 was a bad camera but I did say it's not in the same league as Leica and it's not. Whether the difference is worth it to you is your choice. It was and is to me.

But saying that Leica is the ONLY way to go is like saying you can ONLY drive Mercedes. Leica isn't the only choice, it's simply the one YOU chose. You still didn't point me to a website... ;)

It's not in the same league but if I were a Leica user, how close it gets for a fraction of the price, would burn me up. Anyway, there's all kinds of ways to put a nail in wood
