@JPR, great photos, reference to your 400mm? I'm assuming you're now using the 1Dx which is FF. Do you think the 400mm on a 1.6 sensor might make shots from the 1st base or 3rd base side too tight? I'm leaning to the 300mm as the 1.6 makes it 480mm. I know a guy that has a 600mm and unless he's behind the centerfield fence shooting home plate, it's not very useful. Sure would be nice if Canon would come out with a 1Dx? with a APS-H sensor. I suspect that will in order to appeal to sports and wildlife photographers.

I think a 400 on a 1.6 crop body would be too tight from 1st & 3rd and would go with the 300 in that situation. Before purchasing my first 400mm f/2.8 I struggled over buying the 300 or 400, but went with the 400.

Simply amazing! Great shots as always. How do you find the overall IQ difference between the 1DX and 5DIII? I'm asking because your shots with 5DIII were just as stellar. Do you ever find the 1DX's less MP a little shortcoming VS the 5DIII? I'm in the fence of upgrading to 1DX from 5DIII, but less MP is just one of very very few drawbacks at this moment.

I have photographed sports with 5DM3s since they first came available in May of 2012. I was so impressed with the image quality of the 5DM3 that I sold my 1DM3 & 4 and purchased a second 5DM3 while waiting for the release of the 1DX. When they finally released the 1DX I told my dealer to cancel my order and I stayed with the 5DM3s both with battery grips. I loved the image quality, AF system and silent mode when photographing performing arts - drama, ballet, orchestra concerts etc. I did miss the 1D bodies and just recently decided to borrow a 1DX from Canon to evaluate, BIG mistake  Immediately fell in love with the speed of the 1DX for sports. So I purchased a 1DX and use a 5DM3 as my second body. I find the image quality between them to be very similar and would highly recommend either body. The 1DX does have a performance advantage with 400mm f/2.8 lens and the faster fps is very nice for sports.
