At a local duck pond today and ran across this guy . He just would not move much . Took several images and some video footage of him and even with the video he didn't move much . local people said he hung out quite often there and was quite friendly posing often for pictures .

Yes, definitely a black crowned night heron.

I think the name for the green heron is wrong, it should be red or rust throated Heron, as they are rarely ever "green" (most often more of a slate gray that has bluish tints, but they do swing green. Might be diet?) ..and the red throat is a very clear distinguishing feature.

It's all in how the light hits them....

The green shows most during breeding plumage. Otherwise it's hard to find any.

Bird names often don't make much sense. One of my favorites is the Ring-necked Duck. It does have a barely visible brown neck ring. It also has a very visible bill ring. Why not Ring-billed Duck? Sometimes I think Audubon and his buds were eating wild mushrooms on those excursions.

Nice capture of the Black-crowned Night Heron Ron. I hope you've been doing well, it's been a while.

Jake, this is a good representation of how the Green Heron earned its name. I don't often see them with this much color, but every now and then I will.

Indeed, I have seen them look very green as well. But it was many years and many birds before I ever saw one in person that looked green enough for that to be what I'd name it!
